just reminded myself that after all the talk about the giants wanting to trade for tony gonzales, or trading sinorice moss...well.. nothing happened
any thoughts on this ? did the giants do the right thing by standing pat ?
i think moss will be gone one way or the other in favor of manningham next year, but they really dont have a solid receiving tight end.. and they still are missing shockey.. for one, i am glad not to see tony gonzales in a giant uni...

I had heard that the Eagles were in the talks for Gonzo as well, as they are not happy with LJ Smith. That actually made more sense to me than the Giants giving up what they had just got for Shockey.

I was more concerned about Gonzalez as a Giant than Roy Williams as a Puke

i agree with that totally..
They're kind of a tough team to read. To this point they've played a really soft schedule but they're getting into some games where they'll see tougher competition. Cleveland showed that if you can contain their d-line then their back seven is rather average. Like so many team, if you can keep them from playing with a lead then that keeps the door open. I'm still not sold that Eli won't continue to make those errant throws like he did last week if pressured, but to their credit they have an outstanding o-line. That being said, I'm glad they didn't add a weapon like Gonzo.

not a lot of teams have been able to containtheir front 4, in rotation... hard to tell if the cleve o line is that good or the giants just had an off game.. after all, we did control their d line in our second meeting with them last year

Yeah, that's the rub. I personally think that Cleveland does have that good of a line, or at least one of the best left sides in the game in Thomas and Steinbeck (and even Fraley at C has managed to hang in there well after Philly let him walk).
I think you'd agree that the Skins offense, in large part due to the play of the o-line, is far better than what NY saw in week 1. If they can continue this level or tighten up a touch, then there should be room to work with. This brings up the question of what Spags does the second time around against Zorn now that he's got tape (or Jim Johnson or whoever is Dallas' DC for that matter).

I don't think the Giants did stand pat. They just refused to overpay for Gonzalez. Peterson was demanding a 2nd rounder for Gonzo, and nobody was willing to give more than a 3rd. I'd bet the Giants were one of the teams offering a 3rd.
I think their front office has done well.

i think the edge shifts to us over spags.. particularly the way JC has been playing and because we will be at home..

you can certainly reasonably argue that the giants made a calculation that gonzo wasnt worth whatever KC was asking. but by any yardstick you choose, the giants did EXACTLY stand pat..
time will tell whether this was a wise choice or not..

If by standing pat, you refer to the outcome, then yes. If by standing pat, you refer to the actions before the outcome and the intentions, then no. I tend to think in terms of the latter. To me standing pat would involve never engaging in those discussions for Gonzo in the first place and making a deliberate decision to stick with the team they've got.
Enough of semantics.
What has happened to Boss this season? For someone who was so critical to their Super Bowl run, he's been a complete non-factor this season.

I dont think Jerry Reese is all he's cracked up to be. What's the deal with the Shockey/Gonzalez trades for example. That was one of the most dysfunctional processes I've seen from a FO not located in PG county, MD.
Let's trade Shockey this offseason
No lets keep him b/c we won't get fair value.
Let's trade him for a draft pick as there's some talent in the 2nd round we want, Boss can fill in just fine.
No Sean Payton, we won't give him to you unless you give us a late round pick as well.
Okay drafts over now lets trade him to New Orleans anyhow for the 2nd rounder except now its a 2009 pick still with no late round selection.
Fast forward two months, Boss isn't cutting it, we need a pass catching TE.
Gonzalez is available but they're gonna want the 2nd we got for the pass-catching TE we traded who's 5 years younger.
Offer a third and thats it.
Crap, they didn't bite, we're stuck with Boss this year, prob could have traded Shockey after this season for a 2nd rounder.

the reason boss has been far less of a factor is because there is no shockey to pull coverage away from him.. that is why getting gonzo would have been such a positive step for the giants

and the way they have handled sinorice moss is foolish.. they may feel they have better in manningham.. might be true.. but tyree is just coming off of knee surgery and they dont know what they have inhim.. add up the plaxico meltdown and they have a potential meltdown..
boss does not give them the ability to stretch the field that shockey did (of course, shockey is injured this year as well..)... i think missing on gonzo bites them badly this year...
