ok, i am still hurting from the loss but i have healed enough to write this. had we won it would be on right after the game. but, with a stinging loss it has taken me awhile, and i am still feeling crappy (i haven't left my house all week unless its to go to work)
so i was at the stadium, walked in from the tailgate club and went to grab a rally towel. asked the dude for one and this lady passes me wearing that sparkling jersey that portis mom wears. i initially thought, no way, it couldn't be. i grab the towel and thought some more, and decide that it was. she looked just like her.
so she had stopped to get something from the concession stand and was standing in line. i walked up next to her and said "excuse me mam, are you portis's mom?" i know, not the greatest opening line, but you gotta understand i was hyped for this game and i just ran into the lady who gave birth to the heart of our team.
She siad "yes i am."
i am paraphrasing here, but i pretty much said that it was an honor to have her son on our team, and that he was the heart of the redskin organization. we talked a bit more about some non-football stuff, and she asked me to walk her to her seat. of course i said yes, and we continued the conversation.
now most of the conversation related to portis, and everything, but i asked her how she like dc and so forth. i would say 50 percent of the conversation tho was about Sean. i can't rehash what the conversation was because it is to painful, but its fair to say that she was devastated and that not just her and the family has changed but portis has changed everything he does. taking somethings more serious and others not. how he talks and what he does.
i just wanted to share this story, as it was truley great to talk to her. i got to know a little bit more about her, what she likes her humor side and more about portis and what drives him. i also learned how sean's death affected her. i tried to present my self the best way i could to show her that redskin fans are smart and kind and we care about people who lay it on the line and play all out. i made sure to tell her what a honor it was to have portis on the team, how the lose of sean affected me personally and how it has effected the fan base i know.
