Now that we have DeAngelo Hall and Santana for punt returns, can/should we take ARE out of the role? I mean, he's almost laughable during the returns. All this east-west and little north-south movement isn't very productive. Besides, that punt he let go on the 12 that was recovered on the 4 yard line was the final straw in the final straw bag that broke this camel's back.

I'm not trying to jeopardize 'Tana but I never feel like we're close to breaking anything with ARE back there.

I agree that ARE does nothing returning punts.... but I wouldn't call it an experiment. He was pretty good in Pittsburgh if I remember correctly.

Moss it too valuable to risk at PR and Hall has never done it consistently at the NFL level. I imagine ARE will get 90 percent of the rest of the returns this season. Perhaps that's a skill Hall can work on for '09.

Agree with the Pitt assessment. But he's simply been lacking in this role since we acquired him. He's just simply not a threat anymore. And our offensive scoring capability is dismal which has me looking to other aspects of our game for point production..... Call me crazy, I guess.

You're not crazy, there just aren't any other options. Zorn said specifically he wouldn't toss Hall out there without significant confidence in his ability not to turn it over. I doubt that will happen in the next five weeks.

Let #45 try some PR when we play the Bengals just to see how it turns out.

Im pretty sure im right, but the Punt that was toward the sideline, and was let bounce out on bounds at the 4, was Hall back there.

Those with TiVo plz check that, because im positive i saw #23 back there on that.

I have TiVo but blanked the game after watching it. I saw what you saw regarding Hall being around there but after rewinding it, DeAngelo showed up after the punt hit the ground and started rolling. At least that's what I remembered from watching it a couple of times.

I'll be interested to see if Kelly turns into a true #2 and we put ARE back in the slot if his punt returning numbers increase.

Maybe
Pittsburgh never gave him as much reps at WR than we do

Sorry, this is not an experiment. He is our punt returner. Besides, I think he's done a fine job the last few weeks. He struggled early on, obviously, but he's managed to get a few returns for 10-15 yards in recent weeks. That's really pretty decent.

Besides that, the only punt return yesterday that made me cringe was Santana's.

We'll see what happens next year, but expect ARE for the rest of the year.

ARE hasn't had a lot of sucess returning punts except the first year he was here but he's been very reliable at not fumbling them. I would not mess with this. Use Moss 1 time a game and that is it.

Even if not, it makes sense to put ARE back in the slot just because he's likely to see a better match up there than on the wing. I'd like to move Tana to the slot a few times and either get a LB or safety on him or have the CB chase him when he has the whole field to work with.

the only way we could get worse then el is if someone could field the punts

It creates all kinds of matchup problems for the defense. He still may get there though.

Does it really matter where tana lines up? Until we have a viable option at #2 he will be doubled no matter where he is... agreed?

And kelly although showed promise, does anyone here really trust his knee quite yet? I would like to see a few games with him healthy first. We really need players who can produce and STAY healthy after dealing with springles and the rest of our injuries.
