so many of you have probably seen this already, but thought i'd throw it in here. the title is the score of a high school girls basketball game between 2 of the schools from the district my HS played in. the coach of the winning team has been fired. anyway, my best friend's brother in law is the AD at the school that ran up the score and now he's having to deal with all the mess, including firing a friend of his. the story's below and i pose the following question. given that the district has no mercy rule and the coach pulled his starters in the first quarter, what would you do? do you tell your 2nd and 3rd stringers not to play when they have the chance simply because of the score? do you intentionally turn the ball over every possession? do you run the shot clock down and give it to the other team?
there are some reports via the grapevine that the reason he was fired was he continued to employ a full court press, but no one has verified that. anyway...thoughts?

Keeping the press on seems a bit rough, but you have to keep playing. Do they have a shot clock in high school? This comes up sometimes when the private schools play the similar sized public schools in football out here. Ultimately it with the fact that a coach needs to teach his kids to play four quarters and trying to protect the other team's self-esteem shouldn't factor that much. I say that having been on the bad end of a 74-6 loss in football when they didn't pull their starters until the 4th.
I think the AD was wrong to fire the coach. It sends a poor message to both the winners and the losers in that game. You should never shame kids for winning if they did it legitimately and within the rules, ever.

unfortunately, Brice wasn't given the option. his principal and school board pres. made it clear that it had to be done.
i tend to agree that you can't tell the kids not to play. things may have changed since i graduated, but i know that we had a shot clock back then because i operated it. fortunately, from what i can tell, no one is demonizing the girls on the winning team, but i have a feeling that it won't take long for someone to criticize them as well as the coach.
edit: and if he did keep the press on the whole game, that's definitely something to not be real proud of as a coach.

The report I heard said he kept the press on till they hit 100. Don't know if that meant it was the entire game or they just decided to only play half court d and not score for the rest of the game.
I don't have a problem with this. The other coach is the one that should be fired. 0 points in a an entire game? C'mon

i have read several accounts that said he not only kept the full press on but the coachign staff was celebrating the threes and layups like it was some kind of big victory late in the 4th quarter. It was ridiculous. If that is true, he should be fired. This is HS, not the pros. They could have run a basic zone when they got up by 50 points. The fact they took off the press when they hit 100-0 tells me they were aiming for that goal and that means he was trying to take advantage of this team for some reason. It smells fishy to me.

"Dallas Academy girls, portrayed as lovable losers on the court but winners in life for their attitude after the loss, have been showered with praise nationally. They’ve were on ABC and CBS network morning shows on Saturday and are scheduled to make a repeat appearance on ABC’s Good Morning America on Monday as well as their Today show debut. "
Oh yeah, they sound real sad that they got killed 100 - 0. All those TV appearances must make them feel like they lost really bad. It is highschool, but that doesn't mean it shouldn't be competitive. The other coach should have been fired before this guy was.

There are so many things about this that infuriate me. It was a high school basketball game. At this point, it isn't all about fun and having a good time. It should be competitive. If a team can't keep up, they should get a good old fashion beat down. It is disgusting that the coach got fired and equally disgusting that this loser team is going on talk shows and celebrated? This country is sending a message to the youth that everyone in life is a winner. Then the kids melt down when they hit the real world. Ugh...

If you are a big enough loser the media will turn you into a winner. The continuation of the wimpification of the US.

There is no way the coach should be fired. If there was taunting on his part he should be reprimanded, not fired. The losing coach and the losing school should look at there program and find out why you can even get to the foul line. You play to win the game.

Just so everyone knows, the school that lost is a school for kids with severe learning disabilities. They shouldn't be looking at their program and figuring out why they can't get to the foul line, Herm. They should be looking at their program and figuring out why they're playing other, larger schools and not doing more intramural activities.

Duh... Even atheists know that Jesus isn't a fan of the full court press...
In a vacuum, this is such BS it isn't funny. So the second and third string girls shouldn't get a chance to play "all out"?? What does that say to them if they are asked to go in and "take it easy". Now I will say if the coach is celebrating every basket in an unpofessional manner then fire him but otherwise, the backups deserve a chance to go out and execute the playbook.
And don't get me started about putting the losers on TV... That sends the perfect message to those young girls.

they specifically target kids with ADD, Dyslexia, Dysgraphia, etc...i may be wrong, but i don't know that i would call those severe. it's not like we're talking about kids for whom it's a miracle they can even put their clothes on right in the morning. while their focus isn't (probably rightfully) on athletics, the kids are healthy kids that haven't won a game in 4 years.
also, they've pulled themselves from the rest of district play and are scheduling JV teams to re-stock their schedule.

i am sorry I must be the lone voice of dissent I guess. this hs girls basketball, not college. The big HS should never had this school, which had about 20 girls in it, on the schedule. That is not the coach's fault that I know of but I bet he had some say. That being said they had annihilated this team before and were destroying them again.
If it is true and they kept the press on until 100-0 that is a dick move and they were trying to get the notoriety that he got. If that is not true I retract my statement. There is simply no reason to keep the press on after halftime, but reports are saying it was on until the middle of the 4th quarter and the game turned into a layup drill. Yur up by 50, you know your press is dominant, take the opportunity to work on oyur half court defense zone, us e the game as an opportunity to teach your girls instead of kicking another team while your down.
If this was the pros or college it would be different but this game became a farce and the coach of the winning team IMO tried to run up the score to 100-0 to gain headlines, that ihe is fired because of it is chickens coming home to roost.

i don't disagree with you about the press, if he kept it on as long as it appears, that's pretty bad. as for scheduling, these 2 schools are in the same district. they didn't have a choice but to schedule them. the losing school didn't make the decision to play smaller schools until they had gone 4 years without a win and lost 100-0.

just to be clear, the small school is at fault for scheduling too....if they can't tell after 4 years of not winning that they belong in a smaller district or intramural or something then some people need to look at them as well.
As for puttng the losers on tv, i don't like that simply because 15 years from now those girls will hstill be living it down. However there is a story here about trying in the face of unsurmountable difficulties...not sure one I want on permanent record though.

My main problem in the story is that they were still pressing and had their starters in.
I coached a basketball team years ago and my guys were better than most of their competition. We had a few games get out of hand so I would tell my guys that each one of them had to touch the ball on offense before a shot could be taken and no shots could be taken from inside of ten feet. Also, on defense I made them all play a perimeter zone so the other team could take shots. We still increased the lead but it was fair and we won the sportsmanship award that season too.

Even in marching band we were taught to have no mercy. Wonder how this would have turned out if the other school had gotten upset.
I agree, he could have stopped the full court press but we teach these kids to compete. The goal is to win. There should be some form of sportsmanship and I like how Dave handled it in his story.

Yeah, we did that a few times in soccer. 3 touches per player before you had to pass, only headers on goal. Taught teamwork and helped develop a crossing game.

Right, but the point is that they shouldn't have scheduled this game at all, especially after four years of not winning a game. If the team is that bad, it's doing more harm than good to the girls on it.
Intramural basketball would be the way to go with this school, in my opinion. There's not as much to play for, but when you haven't won a game in four years, what are you playing for anyway?

Well.... I have to say - I'm the guys who admits his football team didn't win JACK in HS. In fact, we lost most games double digit to goose egg (and the rest double digit to single digit -loo). I can remember a 72-0 beat down, a sixty something to nothing pummelling....... point being - there was none of this pandering to us. Bottom line - they need to quit this crybaby, victim building support group - - - - - or give me a book deal IMMEDIATELY:Peace:

I don't disagree with too much there but I admit we don't have the key facts that could sway our POV....
BUT (there always is one)
I would like to clarify a couple points:
#1 HS girls/boys need to learn the realities of life and part of that learning is losing so I adamantly disagree with coddling at that level. \
#2 Scheduling is a catch 22 b/c the small schools need to play bigger schools to get better.... I'd bet a dime that the losing coach was pounding the pavement to get some big schools on the calendar and would be whining if they all said "no". It is an interesting dynamic but not one you can lay on the big school IMO.

Agree... but the second and third string dgirls on good teams need to learn to press and play all out as well.
