For all of those people crying about Taylor getting treated unfair. It looks like Snyder is starting something here and if Taylor doesn't want to get aboard. Than I say good bye don't let the door hit you on your way out. Hall, Dockery and Haynesworth signed there contract with this clause in it. They tried to get Taylor to he said no. So Dan said goodbye.

Washington Redskins owner Dan Snyder has been accused often of throwing money at players, the latest example being the seven-year, $100 million deal given to free agent defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth (pictured right). But it appears that Snyder has added a method to his madness.

Multiple team and league sources confirmed that the Redskins included hefty workout clauses in contracts for Haynesworth, cornerback DeAngelo Hall and guard Derrick Dockery.

In addition, two sources said that the workout clause was at the root of the decision to cut veteran defensive end Jason Taylor, who wouldn't agree to the stipulations because he didn't want to spend the offseason in Washington rather than be in Miami with his family.

Both Haynesworth and Hall have $500,000 annually tied to working out. Haynesworth must attend 75 percent of offseason workouts. If he doesn't do that in any of the first three years of his contract, he gets $500,000 reduced from his guaranteed money for each year he doesn't do it.

Haynesworth is currently guaranteed $41 million in his contract. Over the final four years of his deal, Haynesworth gets an additional $500,000 for working out each offseason.

Hall must work out at least 85 percent of the time in the offseason program which runs 13 weeks and includes three days of working out each week.

The move is a small measure of team building by a team that has been often criticized for simply trying to put together a high-priced roster, such as when the Redskins in 2000 signed defensive end Bruce Smith and cornerback Deion Sanders.

My question is, Is Portis still "exempt" from the workouts? And if so, why?

i think that's a fantastic idea, and if jason doesn't want to do it then goodbye sir, thank you for your "chris canty" 3 1/2 sacks last season. Though i do understand him wanting to spend time with his family, it's kind of silly that he doesn't just move them up here?

I am not sure if they can apply this clause retro-actively to players under contract, can they?

So, as long as Portis is under contract, the only way I can see them doing this would be if they try to restructure his contract for cap-space reasons,
but why would Portis agree to such a thing when he didn't have to?

It's not gonna happen to Portis....

Uh, if the writer took the time to look at the contracts signed by Hayneworth, Hall and Dockery... maybe he should have taken the extra effort to check and see that Portis has the same clause after signing an extension last offseason (in fact, it's been WIDELY reported how Portis was at most if not all offseason workout sessions). Just taking a shot at Portis for no reason...

I like this as well. Zorn said he is a firm believer in giving the guys time off, so we're not talking that these guys have to be at Ashburn from March until the start of training camp. Really, they should be there 100% of the time.

It seems like these clauses are becomgin de rigueur in most new contracts, especially those on the high end.
However, a lot of guys choose to skip it anyway..what's $500k when you're staring at 8-10-12+mill for the year? Prior to being traded last year, it was reported that Kris Jenkins left upwards of $2mill on the table over the course of the last few seasons in work clauses that he just chose not to attend.

I like the clause. And for the kind of money these guys are making, I don't think it's too much to ask for them to show up for work three times a week during the offseason. Given the number of hamstring injuries and calf strains in the NFL and the impact they can have on a team, this strikes me as kind of a no-brainer.

First, JT had no choice in coming here, he was under contract. Second he is hardly at fault for not fitting Blache's scheme and being a RDE, not a LDE. Third the move to get the clause in was started by the fo, and was to renegotiate the contract. JT had every right to enforce the existing contract by refusing any change. Last, JT didn't ask for his release, the fo gave it to him. I can hear his sigh of relief from coast to coast.

Apparently the Skins wanted to add an addendum to Taylor's contract regarding this stipulation. Have they added addendums to every single player on the team's roster? My guess is no.

I still think the fallout between Taylor and the Redskisn FO was mutual and had ZERO to do with some workout clause.

Bottom line: The skins needed the cap space and Taylor hated how he was being used. The partnership clearly didn't work last season and both sides know it. The FO is just trying to spin this in their favor for the fan's support. I'm not buying it.

The dagger will be when Jason puts up 10 sacks for his next team...

Unless that team is OK with Taylor's desire to free lance (which he did extensively in Miami) and his paying substandard attention to offseason workouts and conditioning, they shouldn't expect more than 6 sacks out of him.

I agree, they probably could not agree on the restructure, but they probably also could not agree on the work out clause as well.

Whats $500,000 dollars to a $100,000,000 dollar man?

My guess Taylor will wind up in Jacksonville.

My gut feeling too. Buyer beware for the teams, or maybe he just does everyone a favor and heads to hollywood.
