Is it just me or is this uber jerk popping up more than should be humanly possible? Before Obama got elected he was almost nonexistent. Just this year he's been the biggest camera whore I can recall seeing in a long, long time.
Now he's fighting AIG bonuses (http://voices.washingtonpost.com/economy-watch/2009/03/cuomo_joins_fight_against_aig.html?hpid=artslot). Way to get out in front of yesterday's news, Andrew.
Is it possible to dump a bunch of baking soda on him and make a volcano?

He's going to take on Patterson in 2010. He should leave AIG to the Federales. Their money and they can get AIG into compliance without going to war over them.

The last thing America needs is another Cuomo -- least of all one assembled from the parts of lesser Cuomos, lol.

Oh, and exactly what jurisdiction does idiot Cuomo think he has over whether AIG gives bonuses or not? NYC didn't lend them any money. Friggin' idiot.

The NY AG usually has some jurisdiction over wall street malfeasance. He has jurisdiction over Merrill Lynch(since they're based in NYC), AIG is also.

On what grounds? AIG hasn't done anything illegal as it relates to NYC law. They haven't even done anything illegal as it relates to Fed law. The problem is that AIG just doesn't "get it". That's not illegal, that's just callously symptomatic of the disconnect between a lot of Fortune 100 firms and the customers they serve.

I agree, but he can subpoena them and records investigating fraud/financial malfeasance. I don't think you have to try hard to convince a judge for a warrant or subpoena in NYC.

You have to show that there is legal basis for the subpoena. I have no idea what Cuomo could get it for.

Defrauding investors, state tax evasion, etc. I don't think he would have to work hard to find a judge willing to issue a subpoena.

Defrauding investors is an SEC deal. They might be able to get AIG on some tax code violations at the state level, though. In any case, it's extremely thin. I'm 99.9999999999% certain that this is about Cuomo being a pandering political whore, not about what AIG did or didn't do.

Oh, I'm not saying Cuomo will get any convictions, he's just looking for subpoenas to shame companies into forgoing bonuses and such. Getting those subpoenas probably isn't difficult at all.

Like you said, it's the Fed's job -- not his. He couldn't care less about bonuses. Cuomo cares about Cuomo and his political career. His brazen showboating is disgusting, even for New York.

given that these bonuses were all but public knowledge and the administration basically said they had to be paid, i agree with this assessment.

edit:
further highlighting the fact that the powers that be knew this was happening, and likely making the anger more serious, I present Sen. Dodd writing language specifically protecting the bonuses.

edit again to add a more "acceptable" source for the Dodd info

The powers that be are just trying to get out in front of this bonus thing. Sure, they knew about them and even allowed for them. That doesn't change the fact that the public would be bitter about it and would (further) blame the Federal government for brokering a bad deal with AIG. It's all political showboating in the WH and Congress but I can understand that. What I don't understand is the paper mache issue that Cuomo is holding up over his head while enveloped in a knee high fog bank inside of a house of mirrors, lol.
