President Barack Obama's aunt will remain in the United States until at least next year as she awaits a chance to make her case before an immigration judge in her bid for asylum from her native Kenya.
Onyango, 56, first applied for asylum in 2002, but her request was rejected and she was ordered deported in 2004. She did not leave the country and continued to live in public housing in Boston.

If it were anyone else, I think they would have been deported. That said, deporting a relative of the sitting US President to an unstable country where she can be taken hostage as some form of leverage is probably not a viable option either. As much as I hate the idea, I think the aunt gets a green card by virtue of her being a piece on the secret service chess board.

not sure how valuable she'd be as a chit...from what i've heard, Obama barely knows her. not that a sitting pres. would allow himself to look cold like that, but how is she any different than any number of his family members that are already there.

That's a good point. I just feel that's why she'll get her green card. Also, he'd likely dent his Latino support if he deports her.

I don't know whose lifestyle I enjoy subsidizing more through my taxes. Paying for housing (and most likely food stamps) for an illegal immigrant or covering collateral calls through AIG to Goldman Sachs so they can pay out large bonuses. Class warfare started a few years ago and the middle class is losing... Big time

Do you think they should deport her? I'm thinking they should. I was thinking that it would cause an undue security risk but, as Fent pointed out, there really is no difference between this aunt and any number of other Obama relatives already in Kenya.
