Byron Trys out Friday (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=1627070)
Byron Chamberlin was released by the Vikings and is being auditioned by the Skins. I hear he is really out of shape about 30lbs over weight but if he can get in shape he could be a great weapon and the answer to our TE problem. He was just a pro-bowler 2 years ago but he is coming off of a substance abuse suspension. I haven't decided if I want this guy or not.

Right now, he's 6'1 270. Not good measurements for a pass catching TE.

I know but can he be any worse then Royal or Flemister???

How is Chamberlin at blocking? Thats the most important aspect Spurrier wants in a TE. A good pass blocking TE that can catch the occasional short pass would be awesome.

Let see, if he can lose 21 pound by Friday he might be worth a look.

If we give him a shot on the roster put a weight cause in the contract. Can that be done? Diet Time! What's the story on the
substance abuse? That worries me for sure.

He definitely has the ability to be a pro bowler. He's already shown that once. If he can get down to 260lbs he can be effective. Thats about a 15lbs loss. I would love to see us sign him to a 1 year minimum deal if we could get that done I think its definitely worth the risk.
Texas Skin, I believe his suspension was based on a dietary supplement he took although I could be wrong. He was suspended for 4 games and his next failure is a season long suspension.

Why mess with the O chemistry right now. This is not a west coast dink and dunk offence....there's not enough balls to go arround...

I am with AZ here. If he can block he may be worth a look. Fact is we have struglled with picking up blitzes, both with TE and RB. We really miss, IMO, Walter Rasby's blocking. Flemister and Royal are not impressive blockers.

I'm with you bro - what really pissed me off, they let Wychek go. That's when I first "woke up & smelled the coffee". Norv & Casserly could make caviar stink.
PASS ON CHAMBERLAIN.
He'll be 33 in a month. Old, overweight & one appearance as an pro-bowl alternate (Wesley Walls injuried out)?? Continue with the youth movement.

Damnit!!! When I first heard the Redskins were interested in Byron Chamberlain, I thought we were talking about a Punter.....GRRRR!

How many sacks does he have?

No better than Flemister? Is that possible?

Nothing better than nothing is still nothing - this guy is not going to change anything for us - PASS.

There's a song lyric in there somewhere :)
And Patrick is absolutely correct, as are most of us, keep the youth movement, teach blocking, and PASS on this!
My 2 cents

as I recall (had him in FF) ... he's essentially an out of shape version of Robert Royal ... athletic good runner good catcher below average lineman
Might be interesting to see Dockery line up as TE (to block) assuming Fiore comes back .... or maybe another O-Lineman ... or for that matter ... wasn;t LaVar the (no kidding) best running back in the state of PA in high school ... I'd rather see him play two ways than Champ ... try Arringington or Pierce at TE ... or Bryan Johnson (that one is probably most realistic of all these off the wall thoughts)

you could even show three backs Trung/Betts, Rock and Johnson and two WR's ... looks odd and dares them not to play run defense ... then have Johnson motion to the TE spot and drop one of the WR back a step ... so you have 2 WR, one pass-receiving quality FB at TE who can block, and two good receiving backs ...
when will we see the bizarre Spurrier plays ... I hope he didn't quit the entertaining habit ... maybe he waiting for a huge lead

Obviously is a signal that this staff is not happy with either Flemister or Royal. Neither has taken the job and run with it and there is genuine concern for this position.

Chamberlin won't know anything about Spurrier's offensive system. Whatever the faults of Royal and Flemister, at least they know the plays and where to line up every down. The holding and false start penalties are all on other guys, not our tight ends. If Chamberlin was in shape and had tried out a month ago I'd be interested. As it is, I'm not.

Very good point Spence. How much could Chamberlain really contribute THIS SEASON anyway. And after his first preseasonthen he'd start the season almost 34? Are we going to get one or two good years out of this guy AT BEST before making another transition??
I'd like to see us invest in a TE who will be here 5 years from now, and has room to get better. Chamberlain is neither.

I would not mind if we signed Chamberlain.

I have no interest in Chamberlain. Spurrier's not going to 'write' him into the offensive script enough to make an impact even if he were to miraculously return to Pro Bowl form. I vote No for Chamberlain.
