Not since Princess Diana married Prince Charles have Americans been so wrapped up in such a meaningful event in all of our lives.

BTW, the dog's name is "Bo". As in B-O. As in the initials of Barack Obama. Narcissist much?

Also, I believe that Obama said they would get a dog from a shelter before taking office. Surprise! They got it from a breeder. Opportunity to raise awareness about abandoned dogs and cats completely wasted. Well done.

The shelter thing was more a wish of his supporters. He did say he would look into it but it would be hard since his younger daughter was allergic and needed a hypoallergenic dog. I still think they could have gotten one from a shelter but it probably would have taken much longer to find the acceptable dog. Also to find a puppy would be even harder. I have rescued two dogs, but my first one i got from a breeder. I understand both sides.

i knew we'd find a chink in his armor ;)

pretty interesting story...as much as the dog is "from" a breeder, it had a pretty interesting journey to 1600 if the WaPo story is correct. sounds a bit confused, though...not sure how else you explain trying to nurse from another male dog...

It's not a very nice looking dog but, then again, I don't like anything that looks like a poodle mix. This dog is appropriate. It's part black, part white, not originally American and I am sure the father was no where to be found. :D

I couldn't agree more. Poodles have to be the ugliest dog breed known to man. I don't understand why there seems to be a growing trend to cross them with any and all other breeds. Also I don't know why they win every dog show I tune into.

The future Mother-in law was trying to adopt a hypoallergenic dog but after looking for several Months all over the east coast she was unsuccessful. A few Months ago it was reported that the Obamas wanted to adopt a golden doodle and I was wondering where on Earth they thought they were going to find a hypoallergenic designer puppy that nobody wanted.

I like Portugese waterdogs. A few folks have them in Old Town and they are always real good with the fiance's dog which is a nine pound shih-tzu toy poodle mix. They are also gentle, they don't yap, and they're good with kids. But they need a good bit of outdoor exercise which might be difficult for the first family to accomodate. They probably should have gotten a smaller dog that can run around inside.

It's the allergenic/shedding thing. Plus poodles are smart. My fiance's dog would change your mind in 15 minutes.

I read somewhere that they have a fenced in yard and probably can find someone to let the dog out when they can't.

I don't but that. No dog is hypoallergenic, especially if they have hair. They should have gotten a chihuahua if they were worried about irritating the child's allergies. Or better yet, just don't get a dog and tell people that they didn't because getting a dog would make their little girl sick.

that is not really true. I am pretty allergic to dogs 9though surprisingly I have three) Poodles and dogs bred with poodles (like the labradoodle) are significantly easier on people with allergies. It has something to do with the type of hair and dander that accumulates. I could have had a poodle and been fine but i much rather have my lab and get used to it. However if you have really strong allergies there is no "getting used to it". I have those with cats, and I can't get even used to it.

Exactly. The dog would have reduced dander or you'd be getting used to it, which isn't hypoallergenic. And if you have profound allergies, there isn't any real option for you.

I'm sure if they looked hard enough, they'd be able to find a "hypoallergenic" dog in a shelter in the DC area. They just didn't want to. Consider it a wasted opportunity to save 10s of thousands of dogs from the shelters as Obamatons moved to emulate their man and others got properly educated about the possibility of pet adoption.

I think IBB's point is valid....hypoallergenic designer dogs are just not as prevalent in the shelters as you may think. Throw in the temperment issues the dog would have to pas and the odds of finding one would be very very low. I hink they should have gotten two dogs, a shelter rescue and a bred dog, but for whatever reason they didn't. It is a missed opportunity because it could have been a great story.

there are some cats that are virtually hairless (see HAWGZHEAD) and almost completely non allergenic. also, some Cat breeds are much less allergenic than others.. out of our multiple cats, there are a couple i am very allergic to, and some i am not at all. it isnt even related to hair length

i dont even react to our Boxer, which is a wonderful breed for allergic folks, but our former black lab just about killed me

Yeah, that was really difficult to do. About 30 seconds after I went to Google, I found 3 Portuguese Water Dogs at shelters and available for adoption in the DC area. Not to mention that there are 4 puppies available in Rhode Island.

I hate poodles just like I hate cats and any other moody, self entitled creatures.

Of course, I don't like any of the choices for hypo-allergen dogs; Poodle, Shi-Tzu, Furby, Tribble...

Get a real dog and get used to it or don't bother.
