Awesome fun. Not a lot of boxers, and all except for 1 and a secret character are recycled from previous games. When you breeze through the first circuit you'll worry about the length of the game but then Great Tiger and Don Flamenco will start kicking your butt around the ring in ways they never were able to do in their 8-bit days. The game is surprisingly challenging, and once you get through the roster of characters, you actually have to fight each boxer again to defend your title. That sounds stupid, but works surprisingly well, because they come back with a new look and a new strategy and are WAY harder. I'm embarassed by how many times Glass Joe knocked me out once he put on some protective headgear. I haven't made it far defending my title yet...

The presentation of the game is great. The flaw in Super Punch Out on the SNES that stopped it from being as good as the original NES version is that the boxers seemed stripped of their personalities. No dancing around to their entrance music, no banter between rounds (because for whatever reason, the matches were all only one round...) and the game just wasn't as memorable largely because of it. That's certainly not the case here. The developers did a great job bringing the characters to life. They all have a ton of personality and you will appreciate how much more you hate them for it. You'll have no idea what Soda Popinsky is saying since each boxer actually speaks in his native tongue (no subtitles, either), but you know whatever he's saying makes you want to knock him to the mat.

The music in this game is awesome and one of the things that I dislike is how extremely low the music volume is compared to the sound effects and character voices, which prevents you from being able to really crank it up. I very much wish there were some audio options so you could turn the music up. The remixes of the old music are fantastic, especially the main theme and the music that plays when you've been knocked down.

I've heard pretty good things about the multiplayer in this game, but haven't had an opportunity to try it out. Each player gets their own Little Mac, so you won't have one guy playing as King Hippo or Bald Bull or anything like that. From what I understand, though, you're trying to transform into some giant, powerful version of Mac before the other dude so you can whoop up on him. Like I said, I haven't tried it, but a couple of my friends have said it's fun stuff.

If you're considering this game at all, it's definitely worth the purchase. Don't let the small roster deter you from picking this up. I was disappointed to hear the total character count, but the reviews were all great so I bought it anyway and I'm totally glad I did.

First thing I did when I got my Wii is download Punch Out, probably my favorite NES game all time.

Maybe a stupid question but I haven't read too much about gameplay or seen anyone actually playing the game; Can you use the classic controller or is it the Wii remote/nunchuk?

Edit: Nevermind found a gameplay vid on YouTube to answer my question. Gotta get it this weekend

Well seems you already got your answer, but yeah, I've been playing exclusively with the wii remote turned sideways which works perfectly fine. That or the classic controller are the only ways I can imagine this game feeling right at all.
