Let me be the first to say, Matt Wilhelm, yes for the vet. min. No seriously, does anyone else think that the only really weak link to the defense is our LB corp? And of course, not for the vet. min.

Needs 30 yards to turn around and makes Reed Doughty look like Carl Lewis. No thanks.

Matt Wilhelm ........ ILB who played mostly ST in San Diego ..... Did start some games but wasn't long before he was replaced.
IMO - he here as a experience practice player and probably will be released by the second cut.

I would bring him in for a workout and would likely offer him vet minimum contract. Better option for strong-side LB than Thomas if he is healthy. Excellent special - teamer. If Glenn and Henson don't prove worthy of a roster spot, as with Vinny's history of lower-round LB duds, Wilhelm would be an option for 5th and 6th LB behind Orakpo, Fletcher, McIntosh and Blades. Although I kind of like Fincher.

LOL. You cannot be serious. Why would you think an ILB from a 3-4 Defense could be a SLB in a 4-3 Defense?

The opportunity to upgrade the SLB spot on this defense has come and gone. We are stuck with what we have for better or worse. Frankly I would move Rocky there.....

not sure he is any better than thomas overall.. both are versatile players who are good on ST's.. besides, who gets cut ? at this point every signing requires someone to be cut.

i dont think there is any rush right now.. if we look weak anywhere after a couple of weeks in camp we can start to look around

Wilhelm has not been in a 3-4 his whole career, and he has the size to play SLB in a 4-3. Remember Carl Banks? He was a 3-4 ILB and switched to SLB in our 4-3 and gave us a good year or two. The skills are transferable depending on the player.

It is you who cannot possibly be serious. McIntosh to SLB? He is barely big enough to play WLB in today's NFC East, and you want to put him up against the TE and a larger right offensive tackle on every play? Are you out of your mind? He'd be on IR by week 4!

wilhelm couldnt hold onto a starting job in a defense that uses 4 LBs. and just because one guy made the transition doesnt mean everyone can transition from a 3-4 ILB to 4-3 SSLB. i'd rather just play our draft pick LBers if it comes to that.

and the team has actually talked about moving rocky to strongside as other pure LBs on our roster(not including orakpo) are more suited for the weakside. and how many times have players proven that size isnt everything in the NFL. i can name a lot more examples of that than players who made the transition youre talking about.

We are always on the same page. I was going to say Rocky is the weak link against any TE not just the big guys on the NFC east.

Matt Wilhelm: 6-4 240
Rocky: 6-2 240
Orakpo: 6-3 250-260.

So, they're all undersized or big enough to play SLB. Some other 4-3 SLBs from around the league:
NYG: Danny Clark at 6-2 245
GB(they've now gone with a 3-4): AJ Hawk 6-1 250
Minny: Chad Greenway 6-2 240
ATL: Stephan Nicholas 6-2 232
Carolina: Na'il Diggs 6-4 240
TB: Angelo Crowell 6-1 246
Detroit: Julian Peterson 6-3 240
Indy: Philip Wheeler 6-2 240
Tennessee: David Thorton 6-2 225
Jags: Clint Ingram 6-2 238

Rocky appears to be in line with SLB sizes in the 4-3.

yeah.. unless it is HB Blades against a TE.. and then you REALLY see a mismatch..

Wilhelm isn't Carl Banks. Pretty asinine comparison.

Kinda strange talking about how weak our LB situation is .... for the most part of the last 10 years we have had great LB's.

In addition to the points that Akh makes regarding Rocky and size, Carl Banks played OLB in the 3-4 which translates much better than ILB.

The Giants LB corps was: LT and Banks on the outside with Carson and Reasons on the inside. When Carson retired he was replaced by Pepper Johnson.

Carl Banks never played ILB. Ever. Which is a bigger reason the comparison is asinine. His role on the opposite side of LT was frequently to cover TEs which is what our scheme asks of the SLB.
