If true ......... picking up Hackett ..... ........... or did he gain weight and now is being converted to OL.

Roydell is supposedly out 4 weeks, so he'd get cut and we get someone who immediately jumps into the #5 WR spot, who also knows the offense. Great pickup (I wonder why he signed since he was hesitant before TC...nobody must be biting on him).
Blogger has tweets on twitter about him: http://twitter.com/redskinsblog

Sounds to me like DJ Hackett will fill the James Trash role. Veteran in the WCO who can help mentor our youngins.

Not too surprised due to his connections with Zorn. But can he play STs? Not sure if he has any experience with ST. He will need to be able to if he plans on being the 5th WR.
not going to lie, i feel more comfortable with him as the 5th receiver than any one of the random rookies unless they REALLY show off in the preseason games.

He had a strong 2007 and got us good in the playoff game. Can't hurt. Much much rather have a new right tacle not a project either.

I was kinda pulling for Marko Mitchell to latch on but I got the feeling he's headed to the LOA.

oh i agree. i'd love to see a levi jones or john runyan sighting, but it doesn't look like that's going to happen.

same here. i'd love to see one of those project receivers really blow up, but it doesn't look like the squad thinks that's likely. would like to know what the contract is, though. it could just be a vet minimum deal to get a body for camp and hope he works out.
He's the Shawn Springs of WR's; if healthy he can play, but those times seem few and far between. No harm in signing him now as he can provide veteran familiarity with the system, but I'll be surprised if he makes it two weeks before pulling up lame with some injury.

Not addressing this need is going to hurt us this season. I wouldn't be surprised if NY rushes 3 guys from that side in the first game. Sorry for the rant but just pissed we didn't do more about it and feel it's going to cost us dearly.

Hackett is a decent sign, i wanted him a few years ago when he left seattle.
could be a mentor and fill the posession receiver role on third downs possibly

I'm surprised they didn't sign him a while ago. A vet receiver that knows the offense? Why not?

my thoughts as well.. if he doesnt have a huge preseason, that is likely where he is headed (PS)

says more about our #5,6,7 receivers at this point than about hackett..

This is an acceptable signing. I was looking for some veteran assistance in the WR corps and we got it in Hackett.

I wouldn't make any decisions about Mitchell yet. Besides, there needs to be a few visits to the PS before he can be eligible for LOA consideration lol. I think one or two of the young WR could end up on the PS.

agree.. i think this is about Zorn feeling some heat and wanting a security blanket in a receiver who knows exactly where to be..

Good signing. Familiarity with Zorn and the West Coast Offense, and brings some experience to the bottom half of our receiving corps.

Makes sense since Roydell Williams broke his finger. But like others have mentioned I would love to see Mitchell grab the spot or even Hagans. Hackett is too often hurt.

Not a bad signing. Is there a receiver we have that doesn't have injury concerns?

I like Hackett and remember what he did to us in that playoff game, but I would rather have a guy like Mitchell make the team. I am hoping that Mitchell shows enough to beat Hackett out, because I think Mitchell has more upside potential at this point than Hackett does. The odds of Hackett making it through the season, or even 1/2 a season are not so good. I don't want to see Mitchell land on PS and then get signed by someone during the season.

I think he has shown enough already to be considered for the PS. Obviously he has to keep showing it for the duration of camp, but I think the guy will stick around here in some capacity. I think there is a decent change that Eloi makes the practice squad as well, especially if Mitchell makes the roster, and maybe even if he doesn't.

we have to see what they can do in games.. remember too, that mcmullen was the best receiver in camp last preseason, and he still didnt stick..
hackett has the advantage of knowing the offense, but he has trouble with injuries

Don't forget the great Taylor Jacobs was a beast on the practice field too. Just never could transfer that to the playing field.
I think its a good signing too. Especially considering Moss is now 30 and health has always been a bit of a concern w/him. Gotta get some experienced receiver(s) out there to help take the pressure off the young guys.

It's a good signing for a #5 WR. His chance of injury drops significantly with reduced playing time, but opposing teams can't ignore him in 5 receiver sets.
The pressure is still on the young guys, however. This is their year to prove that they belong in the NFL. After this season, we should be able to deem them a bust or not.

Good pick up to replace Williams. Hopefully he can stay healthy, but the health and performance of the OL is what bothers me right now.

Nice pick up. Though OL is a big issue for numerous reasons, and the line up has changed, remember how good the OL looked when TC stepped in for JC during our playoff run.
Not that Hackett's the answer to everything, but having a vet receiver who knows the routes and can mentor doesn't hurt one bit.

good signing as he should make the team as the 5th wr although mitchell is having a decent camp.

Safe pickup at #5 WR, who can mentor. But he's often hurt.
As others have said, I'm hoping someone like Mitchell can move up based on desire and performance. He had a good scrimmage I heard. I think that Kelly or Thomas has a lot bigger chance of being in the LOA than Mitchell who is a long shot.

by definition i dont know if a high draft pick can qualify for LOA status..

Some interesting tidbits from Zorn regarding Hackett's potential role on STs and how it affects his chances of making the team.
link (http://www.fredericksburg.com/blogs/view?blogger_id=40)
Will DJ Hackett play special teams?
"Right now he’s not going to be a core special teamer, but that doesn’t mean that we can’t work him in. But he’s not factoring into, like, a Rock Cartwright special teamer."
How important for fifth wideout to play on teams, and if it is, what does that do for Hackett's chances?
"I think it’s very important, but if he excels at the wide receiver position, I can’t give that up either. That’s where problems come in for head coaches and special teams coaches. It’s just a problem that we come up with every year. I think this year is going to be one of those years from our standpoint where it’s going to be tough to cut some of these guys."
