10 minutes into the 2009 season and the Steelers aren't looking too hot. Titans have sacked Ben twice, including one twenty-yarder. Titans defense doesn't look like it's missing Haynesworth at all.

i hope the Redskins are watching this game

object lesson: when you get a chance to put points on an opponent in their stadium, you cant afford to fritter away 2 FG's

ryan clark with a huge error.. another play, another steeler breakdown

7-7 at the half..

we cannot afford for suisham to miss any makeable FG's on sunday..

and, notice the head's up play by Mwelde Moore getting out of bounds with 1 second left in the half.. if not for the penalty that wiped out the play, he would have given them a chance to try a long FG.. just like Betts does all the time..

almost a pick six on the last play of the half, by the Titans.. didnt they do that to one of Norv's teams on the last play of the half ? that might have been on that team of Norv's that went 6-1, and then collapsed and missed the playoffs.. the Titan player ran through the entire Redskin offense onthe way to an Int for a TD.. we lost that game, of course...

WOW
The Titans have been terrible on Special Teams or they would be winning. Their punt returner lets a punt bounce at the 15 on the first punt and then fair catches twice on the 5??? Almost losing one, btw. Who the hell is coaching this unit? The first missed FG is totally on Bironas, no excuse but the blocked FG was just too easy. You can't play this kind of mush ball and fail so badly on special teams.

Zones are great....if you can get consistent pressure with your Dline. But they only really work consistently if you run a 3-4(because you can use your OLBs as rushers).

As I've said a dozen times: Blache's defense was a great scheme up to 2003, when the Dbs could mug the WRs and force the Qb to make bad throws. Combine that with the run defense first mentality, and you can grind down offenses. But they changed the rules and Blache didn't change his defense. Now it just works against bad Qbs/offenses and a good scheme/QB can pick it apart.

as much as i hate the stillers, i love polamalu, and think he's a great example of what a humble, extremely talented player should be. i'm torn, because it makes me happy knowing he'll be out of their defense 3-6 weeks, but i hate that the man himself is injured. i hope he heals quickly just on the personal level.

polamalu makes me wonder what landry would be capable of if we didn't make him play out in the parking lot.

Landry hasn't even shown he can handle that duty. All I see in Landry is a musclebound athlete with little football smarts or instincts. Watching Troy makes me miss 21, who would have been all that and better.

Pitt's defense looked lost at times without #43. Ben got going late in the game, but was a mess through most of the first half. This game could've gotten very ugly if the Titans had realized that it's not the preseason anymore...

Despite that, Tennessee still looked better than I expected. They completely screwed themselves, but putting aside all the stupid mistakes, they still win if they manage to make a couple routine field goals. I thought the Steelers would win fairly convincingly. I still feel like both teams look like they've fallen off a bit, though. Neither team looked like Super Bowl contenders....

But it's week 1. The big picture doesn't even start to come together for a few more weeks.

Nice having football back, even if this game kinda sucked....

DaveKShape

no disrespect to 21 at all. zeus/jesus/xenu/satan only know how good he could have been. all i'm saying is that landry has so much potential that i think gets wasted on him being placed 10 yards too far back.

Not a bad game for the NFL kickoff. Pittsburgh very lucky to get out of this game with a W but thats what they do best - let the other team beat themselves.
The first half was one of the best performance for a saftey that I've ever seen.

Moe
09-11-2009, 09:02 AM
A pretty ugly performance by two of the allegedly better teams in the league: stupid penalties, questionable play calling, sloppy special teams. It was also a pretty clear example of how the league is becoming more and more a passing league. Teams without an effective passing attack will struggle....which of course, makes me a littel antsy for the Skins.

And Mendenhall looks like a bust for Pitt.

I thought it was a pretty solid game for the season opener. It was no surprise that these 2 defenses dominated the game. I thought both defenses looked really good except for a few mistakes and the Titans OT preventesque defense. Tenn really should have won.
Also agree with what some others have said regarding STs. Couldn't believe the amount of fair catches made on or around the 5 yard line.

Landry hasn't even shown he can handle that duty. All I see in Landry is a musclebound athlete with little football smarts or instincts. Watching Troy makes me miss 21, who would have been all that and better.

Me too. Polomalu always does something that makes me miss ST. This game it was the tackle on Chris Johnson, where he shot out of the secondary like a missile to make the tackle.
