ESPN is reporting that Portis is to play today. I believe this might be a mistake, as these bone spur issues can lead to major problems later. Why not let him take a week off?

Yeah, especially this week. Not a smart decision IMO.

If he really has bone spurs a week off isn't going to help . . . he needs to get them removed . . . i had bone spurs in my shoulder and it was MISERABLE!!! . . .
