The booster club president for my area contacted me the other day and asked me to coach my son's basketball team. They're having a problem finding someone to coach the 9-10 pee wee teams for my county. I did say that I could be an assistant coach, and help run practices and such. The problem is that i've never played organizational basketball, but played a ton after school. Mostly 3-3, 4-4, and every so often 5-5.

I don't know if that would qualify me to coach a team or not, but has someone ever had a similar problem? I don't wanna let down my son, and the kids by being a poor coach. I guess I could take a crash course, but I just wonder if anyone else has had a similar experience.

I've never coached myself, but seeing that they're 9-10 year olds, you're looking at scores that range from 12-8 or 16-14. I would think with kids that age you can learn as you go as well. Maybe be the HC but ask some parents that have kids on the team if they would like to help out.

I remember back to those days and our coaches main objection was get playing time even for all kids.

Good luck. It should be fun.

They really need warm bodies! You can find plenty of books, and internet help to put together a game/practice plan.

Mike did a lot of research this past year, and was able to lead the boys to an undefeated season. Although...he did actually play Rugby... but the research made a huge difference this season.

And like DB said, they are younger and probably don't expect super intricate plays and such

At that age your best bet is running dribbling, passing and lay up drills. Have them run up and down the court using both hands. Next practice chest passes and bounce passes. After that, work on lay ups. The rest of the game will either happen or won't.

Not sure how strict the league rules are but teaching them a four corners offense is always valuable as well as teaching the kids playing under the basket to move in and out of the paint. Some leagues don't have three or five second rules.
