View Full Version : Ramsey growing pains

I think Ramsey has more work ahead of him. He has been very impressive thus far for a second year QB... but it seems that our main problems are pointing towards his lack of experience.

1. I think that false starts are probably Ramsey not getting the plays called quick enough. This can be due to not recognizing the defense packages quick enough. Spurrier is taking the blame... but I think Ramsey has more to do with it then we all want to admit.

2. Yesterday I watched Ramsey advertise where he was throwing the ball each and every time. He needs to learn to look off the safeties better. On that pass to Rock Cartwright, if Ramsey had simply looked Hart (Eagles saftey) off then it would have been 7 pts. Instead I watched him look to that sidfe the entire time... giving even a newbie like Hart ample opportunity to make a play.

3. Experience will teach Ramsey that sometimes it is better to take a sack. On that pass tip that landed in Kalu's arms for an Eagles score, Ramsey shouldn't have tried to force the ball in there. I think he should have gone down and regrouped.

4. He trusts his arm strength too much. He has a great arm and it will prove legendary one day I am sure... but he needs to be patient and allow the game to come to him. Yes, he isnt being given much time (something we need to address int he draft), but he can still help the WR's get open by looking off and using a pump fake a bit more.

This isnt all bad... as I have stated many times thus far. Ramsey is going to be great (provided we can help protect him better). But just as it was stated prior to the season... the Skins are rising and falling on Ramsey... he will make the sceptics eat their words one day... very soon!

Well, yes Ramsey needs to identify the blitzes faster but the coaches need to get the right personnel in the huddle faster. Sometimes Ramsey is standing there waiting for them to make a decision and the play clock is ticking. So he gets to the line and has to rush everything.

I've seen him look off defenders before so I know he can do it. I'm just not sure it's required for every pass play.

Yes, take the sack or throw the ball away legally. But know where you are in the game.

Kevin, you laid it out fairly well. I agree. The Coaching Staff has to be more concerned about the status of Patrick Ramsey. He is a 2nd year QB - he will make mistakes, but when the coaching staff sees repetitive problems - somebody has to act.
I'm not suggesting that they pull Patrick, tho it's not as if Spurrier hasn't pulled a QB before, but perhaps change tempo, simplify play calling and eliminate the constant audibles.

I think for his (Ramsey) own safety they should keep him off the field this weekend against the Bucs. I have bad feelings about this next game. If the team can't figure out how to protect him, there won't be anything left of him pretty soon.

Ramsey is ahead of schedule. Hope he doen't pick up any bad habits though, playing so much & so early in his career.

ramsey is playing way ahead of schedule imo. he had a bad game but kept the team in it until the very end. that was something that told me he would be a good QB someday, in last years game against the saints......

I think Ramsey was really banged up in that game, and in serious pain.

He wasn't using his normal throwing motion throughout most of the game. Rather he looked more like he was trying to throw darts. He was wrist-flicking a lot of balls, and I think that was his body's response to the pain he was in.

He reverted back to his old throwing motion in the final drive that resulted in a touchdown.

Im not sure taking him out is even close to the answer. (Not even against the scary Bucs). The more he sees the better he will be next year. He is a fast learner... and will pick this all up with more time.

Spurrier is a genius at grooming these types of players into Champions. I fully feel that one day McNabb will pay Ramsey respects... not putting down McNabb mind you, simply placing Ramsey at the level he will be at.

Take him out? No way. Then we'll just see the QB carousel return. No one pulls their starter because they're afraid of the opponent's defense. What kind of message does that send?

Ramsey's had moments that have shown he's still a 2nd year QB, but he's definitely proven that he's got what it takes to be a great QB at this level. The main thing we need to do to make him better is get him more protection.
