From the first practice in training camp until the last game, Brian Cushing was a tackling machine for the Houston Texans.
That's exactly what the team sought when it chose the linebacker from Southern Cal 15th overall in the draft last April. What the Texans also got is The Associated Press 2009 NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year.
Cushing was a runaway winner in balloting by a nationwide panel of 50 sports writers and broadcasters who cover the league. Cushing received 39 votes Tuesday, easily beating Buffalo safety Jairus Byrd, who had six, and became the second Texans linebacker in four seasons to win the award. DeMeco Ryans took it in 2006.
Green Bay linebacker Clay Matthews, who also went to Southern Cal and was a first-round draft pick, earned three votes. Washington linebacker Brian Orakpo got the other two.

IMO, Orakpo finished where he should have.
Other than the 11 sacks, 4 came against the Raiders, what did he do?
I'm hoping his play at LBer is over.

Agree 125%. His LB play was forgettable. As a DE, very nice season. Like you, hopefully the new regime recognizes that in a 4-3, he is a DE!!! (Blache, you stupid, senile, idiotic, hardheaded, douchebag!!)

Yeah, as much as we may have wanted Orakpo to win, anybody other than Cushing would be a joke

I thought Cushing was going to bust too. Mainly b/c I thought his allegedly roided out body would break down. He and Clay Matthews have both surprised me with how good they have been this year.

If we wanted a LB we should have drafted Cushing, not Orakpo. No problem with Orakpo as a DE but he aint no LB and we should never have played him as one.

While I agree 100% I believe the FOs rationale is drafting the BPA regardless of position. However, they failed to realize that Orakpo is a DE and not LB. IMO, his talent will not be maximized until he's allowed to grow @ DE.

The genius of taking BPA is completely negated by the idiocy of playing the guy out of position.
‘Po didn’t deserve DROY, but I hope he continues to build on his 2009 success. We still need a D-line help considering I think Daniels, Griff, Wynn, Monty, and Golston are all either gone or at least at risk of being gone. Brian isn’t an every down DE yet… Maybe next year, but not yet.

I'm sorry but a player who was pretty poor at what he did for most of the year does not deserve the award. That isn't Brian's fault it is a reflection on a poor FO putting square pegs in round holes. Had Brian been a full time DE, I believe he would have had 15 plus sacks and a much stronger case.

Cushing and Clay Matthews had dominating seasons at OLB. Orakpo had a nice sack total, but didn't make much of an impact.

I'm sorry, but doesn't Cushing play for the Houston Texans? What playoffs are they in? Did the NFL put together a second playoff like the NIT does for college basketball?

Pretty sure that A) His entire post was sarcasm and B) he's referring to the fact that if the Colts didn't lay down for the Jets, that the Texans would be in the playoffs.
Cushing is a monster and if he didn't win it, the whole thing would've been rigged. Kinda wish we would've drafted him. Oh well. Rak is a beast too and will only get better. Hopefully he puts on a couple pounds and learns to tackle a little better so he can become an every-down DE and wreak havoc on opposing QBs.

The sad thing is his post is not sarcasm. He truly believes that Orakpo deserved it more than Cushing.
