Looks like ESPN and a couple other channels are going to be offering 3-D programming this year.
ESPN 3D will showcase a minimum of 85 live sporting events during its first year, beginning June 11 with the first 2010 FIFA World Cup match, featuring South Africa versus Mexico, ESPN and ABC Sports president George Bodenheimer announced.
Other events to be produced in 3-D include the 2011 BCS National Championship Game, college basketball and football contests, up to 25 World Cup matches and the Summer X Games. Additional events will be announced at a later date.
Now I assume this means you will have to have a 3-D capable TV/Box/Provider. I only just purchased a HD flatscreen within the last 2 years lol. Wonder how well this will catch on in the next 5 years. Also wonder if there will be a device to connect to your TV that will make it 3-D capable and not have to buy another TV. Have to wait and see I guess.

Maybe it's only a matter of buying the 3-d glasses like you do at a movie. I do remember seeing a device for 3d gaming once. I believe I was at the Circuit City in Virginia. Met Pyro there.

Well they make 3d Dvds that supposedly work on regular tvs, so i would assume the goofy glasses would be all that you would need.

I was hoping you guys were right (hail2 and bfauble) because I think it would be cool to check out but it doesn't seem to be the case upon further digging.

And, although television makers haven't released specifics, the price of 3-D TV -- which requires a new television, broadcasting content and 3-D glasses -- is not expected to be substantially higher than some high-definition televisions on the market now.

I dunno...I just can't get excited about 3D. Maybe because my eyesight is so wonky and those stupid glasses don't work for me.

Yeah, that was pretty cool. They've been trying to implement 3D into the mainstream for YEARS, but requiring glasses to be put on is apparently a major deterrent for focus groups, which thereby made the 3D movement lack any real impetus behind it. My friend used to play computer games in "3D" by having Counter-Strike (tune me out if this gets too nerdy for you) run through a third party program that would either render the image three times, which I doubt since performance would be severely affected, or it just displayed the image in a 2 or 3 tiered view like what you would see at a 3D movie. My friend hailed this as "amazing", but I felt pretty dumb sitting in a basement and trying to play computer games in super cool 3D. Plus it hurt my eyes.
It's pretty cool what they're up to nowadays, though. Sony is at the forefront when it comes to this technology and they're pushing out these $10,000 beasts of TVs where you don't have to wear glasses anymore to realize the 3D experience. Viewing angles are limited, so don't discount that when you imagine a scenario with you and your friends, but it's still pretty cool. Not $10,000 cool, though. If any of you would care for an example, the Avatar video game for the Ps3 is available to be played in 3D, but it's a feature that seems rather useless since it's estimated that it would cost upwards of $12,000 to utilize the features that the game brings with it.

Cool. Maybe I can take advantage of this 3D thing 9 years from now when I can afford it.
