While most of the news leaking out of Redskins Park the past two weeks has concerned the team's turnover on the coaching staff, there are a couple other areas of the organization that we haven't discussed much: the strength and conditioning staff and the front office. One is being the overhauled and the other -- at least for now -- remains unchanged.

Last week, the entire strength and conditioning staff were quietly let go, including John Hastings, the head strength and conditioning coach the past four seasons. Hastings had been with the team since 2002. Also released were his assistants, Bobby Crumpler, who'd been with the team for seven seasons, and Harrison Bernstein, who'd been with the team for three years.

I think this is the best change that has taken place so far. No more hammys!!!!!

I think this is the best change that has taken place so far. No more hammys!!!!! I wouldn't go that far yet .......... now lets see who they bring in. ...... Chris Doyle, the strength and condition coach from Iowa would make a good selection.

Makes sense in a way. Presumably, for instance, our olinemen will be less focused on bulk and strength and more on leverage and movement skills. Plus there is a difference in keeping older players fit as opposed to making younger players more pro ready.

I read somewhere that the S&C guy from the Steelers was coming in for an interview. Just no more hamstrings issues please.

Excellent move by the Redskins. The Strength and Conditioning portion of the staff is so often over looked but they're absolutely essential to a quality club.

The one the Cowboys have is pretty good, I suppose, but I've wanted them to change our S&C staff for a few years now cause I know there are better options out there.

So this will be an excellent move by the Skins if they bring in the right crew.

Bring in the dude from the AZ Cardinals--John Lott. I believe he's a free agent now.

this makes sense. We have always relied more on bulk, strength and nastiness to move the line for the rush and to protect the passer. With shanny he wants a different line. Quicker feet, more leverage, and more athletic. He wants his lineman to use there athletic ability to take advantage of the dlines strength when they over pursue, or to be athletic enough to cut block effectively, or even change direction if they have to pick up a stunt they didn't see to start the play.

yes i agree, good move. That being said there is no guarantee that the new staff will do any better with injuries. our players, not the S and C may have been the problem there. I think we should be excited that the change in philosophy isn't just the play book or technique, its a organizational thing and they want everything (including S and C) to fit that philosophy. But i wouldn't say it will solve the injury problem cause that may be a player thing, and if it isn't how do we know the old S and C wasn't doing a great job with these guys and the amount of injuries from a lesser S and C would have been far greater. Lets hold our breathe on the injury but be excited that this team is truely starting to resemble a actual NFL franchise.

Does this mean "Big Al" will finally be whipped into shape?

I was thinking, Haynesworth needs a nickname. Ideas?

Good deal. We've had way too many "hamstring", "quad", "shin", and "oblique" injuries in the past couple years. I have no clue if the new staff is any good or not, but I think a shakeup in this department is a good thing.

With what 12 players on IR its about time these guys got fired.

Well I don't think coaches can be blamed for all 12 players. Our antiquarian roster played a significant role in those high numbers, and I'd still like to lay some of that blame on Vincenzo Cerrato.

Regardless, I'm happy to have the new coach put his stamp on everything as long as it gets results. Apparently, they say Shanny is meticulous in the operation of his team, down to the littlest details. Today's pink slip certainly seems to support that notion.

About time, not sure what the new staff will bring but i think this change was warranted.

That's all going to depend on rather Big Al is willing to work hard which, IMO, he has never proven that he wants to or would.

I doubt he's real afraid of losing his job either, given what Snyder gave him last year, so there probably won't be a ton of incentive for a lazy player to become less lazy.

Which certainly isn't to say he's not talented cause he most certainly is. One of the most, if not the most, talented DLinemen in the game. He just appears to be, thus far in his career, one of those guys content to get by on his natural God given talent and to put no real effort or work into being even better.

Hammys have more to do with dehydration than what condition the player is in. If the players stop going out at night and drinking during the season, there would be less "Hammy's"....

But, I like this cleaning of the house, the coaching is good now that they purged it, and the same with the strength staff.

question for those in the medical field here.is it true that a lot of strength and conditioning coaches in pro and college sports give pickle juice to atheletes to
keep them from becoming dehydrated?is it just bs?

Shannihan deserves the right to bring in his own people, especially in this important area.
