I know this is the gaming forum, but my questions are about the PS3, more specifically the blu-ray/netflix capability. From what I read, the PS3 has a top of the line blu-ray player, upconverts DVD's, 120G internal memory, wi-fi standard(?)..... but I'm not really interested in the gaming aspect right now (dont shoot!, just super busy career wise right now) - so my question is, is there a cheaper alternative to just getting a PS3 that offers the same capabilities I mentioned?
I have done some mild searching, but being way behind the curve here, I'm not 100% sure what I want. I want wifi, memory, and a good bluray player - it just looks llike the PS3 is the best way to get all of that. Am I wrong? Any help you guys want to throw at me is much appreciated.

I work for an A/V design build company and for the price I would just get the PS3. There are alternatives but the cost is more than the PS3. Just my opinion though. We put Ps3s in offices and military installations instead of the alternatives for what is worth.

Thanks for the response. That's what I was coming up with myself, but I just thought I had to be missing something. I guess I'm not. Thanks for the help!

I'm not any type of expert on the subject, but from what I've gathered, the PS3 is a really great blu-ray player for the price. I bought it mostly because I'm a huge video game addict, but I honestly use more for watching movies than I do for gaming. Great value, and like I said, I understand you won't find a better deal by just buying a blu-ray player separate. I got mine before the price drop. With the recent price-drop, it's probably a no-brainer.
Enjoy!

Yeah, I got the boss (wife) to sign off on it, so I'll probably pick it up this weekend! Thanks.

Good luck! Let us know how it turns out. What kind of tv are you using? What are you using to connect the two?

Its a Sony. 1080p, 42" - I'm going to run the HDMI cables - but like most things electronic, I'll probably be back to the store 3 or 4 times until I get the right stuff! I'll re-visit this post once I get set up........ I'll spare the gory details of getting it up and running! :)

Since you want wifi, you ruled out other blu-ray players. I have a Samsung 1500 and it streams NetFlix. Blu-ray specification requires a network connection though. My blu-ray player is hooked to the internet wirelessly. I use a wireless gaming controller on it.

Yeah, and I read that having it hard wired is actually a better quality - but I dont want to through.... whatever I'd have to go through to get another drop put in my living room. So wi-fi will save me the hassle. I want easy! :)

The main Goal of the PS3 is to be the best in extreme gaming and its the best gaming console that is out now, graphics and quality wise. Blu Ray movies is an optional feature. Compared to a normal Blu Ray player, PS3 does not have advanced blu ray option, If you are into power entertainment.
But its better to buy a PS3 to , that will allow to watch movies + play video games when u are free, and its cheaper too.

thanks for the response - My days of home theater building are long gone. I grew tired of trying to stay current and up to date with the technologies a long time ago. I would have just stuck to my DVD player and been fine - until I watched a movie on blu-ray at a friends house. I just like the picture quality. And the fact that it up-converts so I dont have to replace my entire collection helped sell me too. I think it'll work for what I'm looking for. Still havent had the time to go out and get it yet though!! Maybe this weekend........:)

What do you mean by Advance Blu-Ray option?
