Anyone else excited for the Olympics?
A terrible tragedy to start the games. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family.

Yeah that is really sad about that Georgian luger. Those lugers are absolutely nuts IMO. I can't believe there haven't been more deaths as a result of the luge.
Love the hockey. Also like the speed skating, downhill skiing events and the ski jump. Snowboarding is awesome to watch also.

As I went to bed last night, the US was leading in the Medal Count with 4.
1 Gold
1 Silver
2 Bronzes
I love watching the small track speed skating. Apolo Anton Ohno is fun to watch. The US was lucky to win Silver and Bronze. The Koreans were 1 2 and 3 until two of the Koreans took themselves out of the race on turns 3 and 4 of the final lap.

Don't forget that other Olympic events are on channels besides NBC. I was watching the female Canada hockey team last night on ESPN2, I think, destroy a team called SVK, 12-0 in the second period or something. Them some big girls!
I enjoyed the womens freestyle skiing on NBC. Their knees look like shock absorbers. Would kill me.

HUGE fan of the Olympics. Loved the Halfpipe last night. It was very clear that White couldn't be stopped.
Was thrilled for Shani Davis, and thought Lindsey Vonn rocked it!
Just wish they would show the medal ceremonies right after the actual wins (most of this is taped right?) Because I have yet to see one American on the Podium

The downhill skiers are mental. I don't know how any of them are still alive or not paralyzed. It is amazing to watch though.
Also love the curling, even though the US team has been frustrating to watch. I can understand poor execution, but from a novice point of view their stone placement strategy has been hard to understand at times.

NBC is just awful. Everything is tape delayed. Its like they are catering to people who have never heard of the internet. Every event is spoiled if I turn on a browser.
Then they absolutely refuse to live stream most events. Add in the constant 3 minute commercial breaks followed by 2.5 minutes of some random event, and you get a disjointed mess.

We got to see Shaun White win gold live last night (complete with profanity from his coach). This Olympics is better than most, actually, for east coast viewers as far as catching live events.
Watched snowboarder Hannah Teter do a splendid job on the half-pipe today. I think they're replaying it tonight. She won the Gold 4 yrs ago. Cute as a bug.
update: Shani Davis wins gold in speedskating, disrespects national anthem by standing there like he's waiting for a bus. Bum.

I don't know what the heck Chris Collinsworth was doing on NBC commenting after the game, but I did like what he said "after Miller's goal you could hear the noise level here drop TREMENDOUSLY"....the crowd was in shock, I am sure after the US took a 5-3 lead on Kesler's goal.

Why is it that USA vs. Switzerland is at noon, Canada vs. Russia is at 430pm - non prime time, and Finland vs. Czech republic is at 7pm and Sweden vs. Slovakia is at 9pm?
Wouldn't it make sense to put the games with mostly european teams earlier and the USA and Canada games in prime time?

Canada just pwned Russia 7-3. The Russians were completely intimidated for the first 35 minutes or so and played like they didn't want to get their dresses dirty.
And the South Korean women just got totally screwed out of a gold medal when they got DQ'd for, well, nothing in the short track speed skating relay. That was some ticky tack stuff right there.

Yeah, but I've seen 2 or 3 DQ's where the skater who was DQ'd didn't even touch the other skater and a couple more where a skater cleanly passed another skater but the skater behind didn't want to give up that last 10% of the pass and caused themself to bump the passing skater... and the skater who did the passing got DQ'd. That's bunk.

I don't think it was intimidated so much as lazy and uninterested.
I don't think this team has much chemistry the way Canada and the US team does. Malkin really not pals with Ovi and Sasha (Semin) on the 1st line and the non-NHLers probably resent the NHLers somewhat - especially considering what big stars Ovie and Malkin are.

According to this...
http://rokdrop.com/2010/02/25/korean-speed-skaters-disqualification-leads-to-chinese-gold/
... the Korean and Chinese skaters' skates touched with 5 laps to go. But, as I understand it, skates touching isn't grounds for a DQ.
You can see the full replay here...
http://www.nbcolympics.com/video/assetid=0e7601d2-5ace-4511-9732-5a78c3238b98.html#full+replay+womens+relay+finals
BTW, if they wanted to DQ some Korean skaters, they should look at the Korean men. I watched 2 or 3 races where they mugged and bullied their way to the front or kept others from doing so. In any of those cases, I wuldn't have been upset because they deserved the DQ. But the Korean women's 3000 meter relay team didn't do squat to earn a DQ. The Chinese skater had been passed and wouldn't give the ground. Well, if you don't adhere to passing etiquiette, you end up trading paint. Plain and simple.

Watching the replays it looked like the Korean chick whacked the Chinese chick with an arm after the initial contact, so I wondered if that was the infraction. If it was just the skates, then that's lame.

I don't think there was contact there. It didn't seem to be in high def and the announcers said they couldn't see any contact, so I'm inclined to take the skates hitting reason that the official told the Korean coach.

And it looks like they got even by DQing AO last night and strip him of a Silver medal. I didn't see the ending so I don't know if it was a good call, but that makes two Olympics in a row where he was stripped. I say we threaten to blow up an embassy.

I think he means that, for the most part, the US left their bigger name players at home and chose to go with younger players in an effort to build a better team. In the end, it was the right decision. This batch went 1-1 against Canada and 5-0 against everyone else. Am I that only one that hates the double elimination? I mean, why did we even have to play Canada again? If you are beaten by someone, then you should be out, and we should be on to the next guy. Isn't that how it is in the other sports in the Olympics?
And to address something else that's been bugging me.
Didn't you all think that there was tremendous disrespect toward the American athletes during these Olympics? There was stuff said about our Athletes, that if an American had said it about another country, there's be rioting in the streets.
Specifically about Ohno, and Lysacek. It seemed that in interviews the Americans were humble and grateful, while others just seemed to whine and place blame...I was kinda disgusted by it all by about day 8

I felt bad for the USA team afterwards. Lose a game then have to wait all that time and come back out for the medal ceremony. You could tell the body language on Parise that he would have preferred to be somewhere else.
Read an article where they say you "win" a Gold or Bronze medal, but you "lose" a Silver. The Fins got to have a victory for the Bronze as their last game while the US has to live with losing and settling for Silver. Truly tough on the psyche.

Plus, the US won one against Canada but lost the title game. That's got to be especially bitter. I suppose that's why NHL hockey has a series to determine who advances and who wins the title. I would have loved to have seen the rubber match between these two in the US on Monday.

What a cosmetically challenged individual. He looks like Adam Samberg doing the raptor in Jurassic Park.
Now THAT made me LOL. Thank you.

Of course not.......
That will warrant a response when who I root for becomes anyones business but my own. Until then I've stepped on pieces of chewed gum that are more worthy of my time.
As for my prior comment I didn't mean it in a combative way so mike I'm sorry if it came out that way. I was under te impression that everyones feelings toward sidney crosby were pretty much out in the open ad I've said before that id hate him too if he wasn't playing for my team.

I am glad I live in the greatest country on earth and am not forced to live in a place I won't even support. Lucky me.

I watched man u win their consolation prize live and I wasn't even able to watch the end of either the lakers game or the hockey. I think they should have kept the olympic sized rinks.

Well, have to agree w/ you there. I hate Lebron for the same reason. And if I was a Utah Jazz or Cavaliers fan, I would hate MJ and any Lakers player.
If Crosby played for the Caps and Ovie for the Pens, Crosby would be the milk-drinking boy next door you'd want your daughter to date and Ovie would be the Russian maffia thug in an NHL uniform (he writes, with humorous intent).
But as it is, Caps fans have had to suffer through Lemieux, Jagr, and now Cindy.... so there you have it.
So of course, you have to have a sense of humor to stay sane :-)

I am fully capable of hating Sidney when he's representing the beady eyed floppity headed maple syrup worshipers, and being a fan of his when he's wearing a Pens jersey.
And I cheered for Kobe when he was on team USA. Even though I hate his guts as a Jazz fan.
But I don't go around gloating after wins and disappear during losses. I know that most of the people here hate the Pens so I don't say much at all. At other boards I frequent that have a different purpose, I get a little more involved.
In any case, I hate Canadia. Stinking hosers.

I wasn't rooting for Canada or anyone else for that matter which is why I didn't "show up". I just found it ironic that it was Crosby that scored the winner. Chill...I didn't post that to start arguing with anyone.
My bad BC. Just the mention of SC gets me going. :)

The bronze medal game was good. But as a bunch of people have been saying..the coaching was just piss poor... Every European team had incredible issues with consistency and it seemed like the lines were forced...
