well, the visits continue.. Barry Sims, T, is due to visit the Skins this week, per the WaPo insiders.. he is supposedly choosing between the Niners (his present team) and the Redskins.. Foerster is also his former position coach, but you know how that goes..
stay tuned.. sure hope we sign a Tackle or BnG is going to have an ulcer before long..lol

That's one foot in the grave for a football career.

Old is relative with OL. Kevin Mawae is 38 or 39 and coming off of a another pro bowl season. Ray Brown played until he was 83 lol.
That all said, just because we sign an OT doesn't necessarily mean that we're addressing a problem. Sims might not be the answer, depending on which Sims shows up in a given year.
Sims allowed 2.5 sacks last season, and as averaged about 7.1 sacks allowed/season. Just for some perspective, Chris Samuels averaged 4.75, Jansen averaged just over 6.0 in his 9 seasons in DC (less the 1 season where he got injured in Week 1) and Stephon Heyer is averaging about 6.6.
I'm not sure that signing Sims would be upgrading a need area. Like Hicks, he might provide depth, but the hole would still be there at starting OT.

The only legit candidate we have had in for the LT spot was Clifton and given his age, I was glad to see him return to GB. I wouldn't have wanted Pashos at LT, I would rather see Levi Brown back there before Pashos.
Speaking of Levi, I think the team is banking on him not getting an offer anywhere else and him coming back on a 1 year deal to play RT. LT comes from the draft in one way or another.

I'd rather have Pashos. In his 4 full seasons starting (he didn't start as a rookie and started 5 games last year) He's given up 4.0 or less sacks 3 times and has never given up more than 7.5 sacks in a season. Jones is OK, I'd take him over Heyer for sure, but we need to look to upgrade at least LT, put Jones on the right side and send Heyer to the bench.

That might well be what happens. Maybe they're hoping that one of the top 4 or 5 OT prospects fall to them in Round 2.

I am hoping for two tackles in the draft. Unless we somehow trade Rogers and McIntosh for one. Somehow.

Barry Sims... Meh. Any sexier prospects out there? Trade for Trueblood maybe. Anyone else who may get cut soon?

+1 you assessment is spot on.. but still having 2 credible backups and at least 1 high draft pick is a start.. add in a RFA like Bushrod or Trueblood and i think we would be very solid

If you look at the Oline as of right now .... I'd venture to say ... it ain't cool! Need to do something really soon please.

Well like I said earlier when you let guys like Clifton(I realize he wouldnt have signed anyway), Pashos, and Foote come and go without contracts then you're left looking at the bottom of the barrel. I still dont think we'll be able to do much in RFA because our guys arent very well thought of and we have no draft picks hence the reason you dont let a guy like Pashos or Foote get away...especially for no more than they signed for elsewhere. Maybe we'll get Simms and he can help out for 2010 while we acquire a starter in rounds 1 or 2 and a guy with upside in round 4.

If Heyer is backup T don't see the need, since I assume by RFA/draft we will get 2 Ts, and Hicks can also backup at both T positions.

# 1 tackle, #2 center, and #4 guard - this would make me very happy!

I think we'd go tackle tackle guard/center if we were to pull all OL for the first 4 rounds.

I'd take Sims over Heyer, even with his age. Also he may be a mentoring guy for some of the new draft picks.

As far as a mentor don't forget that Samules is on staff now. I'm so glad he is still with the team this year.

I agree, nice to see Chris still around the team.
Oh well another OT visit... another OT leaving without a contract. Probably just a negotiating tactic to get more money from the 49ers...

Niners OL Barry Sims finished with meetings with Redskins. Heading back west to resume training. Prob no news on that front til next week

we will see how strongly the Niners go after him.. if they do, he wont be back.. if they are lukewarm, you never know
want to see how Porter's interview goes.. he would be a definite impact player for the team

The guy has lived and played his whole career on the WC, if they're even close I think he stays in San Fran. As for Porter Im undecided on whether or not I'd like him to sign. He's lost a lil bit from a couple of seasons ago imo and would need to play the elephant where Orakpo is penciled in. I think we need an ILB much worse but we let the best candidates for that position( Foote, Davis) sign elsewhere also. I think we have plenty of OLB's to choose from as it stands but I wouldnt be put out if we added Porter for a reasonable, incentive laden deal.

IMO a FO pattern seems to be forming. Get older players like Sims who can start 6-7 games and will be good backups and/or rotation players for 2010, and good backup/rotation players for 2011 and maybe 2012. Hicks and Sims fall into this category. By no means are they a solution in themselves, but they are part of a rookie maturing/backup role for presently open positions like LOT and ROT. Conversely guys like Porter and Foote were to start IMO.
Also I agree with Shally and Akh that lack of activity at this time is not bad, and there will be vets released when the draft is over. Also holes for teams that the draft hasn't addressed will lead to (some) RFA trades. The FO seems to have prognosticated the lay of the land, and I surely hope they are right.

No big loss. He's a #3 OT and we already have 3 players at that position right now. LOL.

while he is a stopgap. unless we kick hicks outside we need two starting tackles. id like to see them trade for bushrod/streif or trueblood but we've heard no rumors. i wonder if they are still negotiating with levi id be fine with him at RT as long as we draft a LT. id like to see us kick the tires on tra thomas,or mike gandy

If they go QB at 4, I think they would be happy with a Fox or Brown at #37.
Happy about Sims signing in SF, it just keeps strengthening the likelihood that we go LT at no worse than 37.
