View Full Version : QB Dominoes to Fall in our Favor (Campbell Trade Speculation Thread)

Going into yesterday, it seemed like 3 teams were heavily in the market for a QB, not counting ithe Rams. With 3 QBs likely to be taken high (although there was wide differnence of opinion about whether Tebow belonged in this conversation), the question for us is, what kind of market would that leave for Campbell, who is the consensus best available QB on the trade market. If the Browns, Raiders and Bills fill their QB need through the draft, we are screwed and will probably not get a decent trade offer for Campbell.

So far, the dominoes have fallen to our advantage, and there is credible speculation out there that might make a trade of Campbell today even more likely if it comes to pass (no pun intended):
*The Broncos weren't supposed to be in the mix for a QB. By taking Tebow, they ruined the Bills plans and kept them in play for Campbell.
*Rumor is strong that KC will draft Claussen if he is still there when they pick at #5 tonight. They reportedly were strongly considering him in the 1st round. Charlie Weiss is said to be lobbying hard for his protege.
*PFT is now reporting that the Panthers are trying to trade up to grab Colt McCoy. I thought the Panthers were sold on Matt Moore and would not be in play for one of the remaining two QBs, but that might not be true.
*If the Chiefs draft Claussen, and the Panthers move up for McCoy, then the Browns, Raiders and Bills all leave the draft with their QB hole still wide open. The Browns might feel they can skate by for a year with Jake Delhomme and Seneca Wallace. Gradkowski played well for the Raiders, but tore his chest muscle and is sidelined for a while-even so, it is doubtful that they look at him as a long-term answer. The Bills woud have to start Trent Edwards or Ryan Fitzpatrick, and they are trying to revitalize their fan base.

If the Bills, Raiders and Browns are all in play for Campbell, our asking price shoud go up. If they want to wait and see how the draft board falls, and they are left holding the bag, it becomes much more of a sellers market.
I could see us getting a 3rd and possibly a conditional pick next year tied to Campbell's performance.

Thoughts? Comments?

i think most of us would love to get a third.

in addition to what you've said in the first post.... Minnesota could be in play. certainly not their top need, but Saint Brett will likely only play one more year. the Vikes are sitting there at #2 tonight. sure, someone might jump up to the rams slot to grab Clausen or McCoy, but the Vikings might not be able to resist Clausen if he's still there at #2. might just be too much value to pass up.

and if carolina cant move up for a QB, they could be interested in JC. it doesn't have to be Oak/Buff only. also, i mentioned on another thread, maybe Minnesota trades out of #2 tonight (cuz someone wants to move up for a QB) and then they have an extra 3rd to trade to make JC the heir apparent to Lord Favre.

maybe AZ dumps Leinart for some mid round picks, then sends 3rd to us so JC can compete with Derek Anderson in AZ.....

this article handicapping which teams might want Clausen mentions the 49ers and Seahawks, 2 teams we didn't mention in this thread as possible players at the QB position.

I predicted JC would get a fourth or worse last week. Hope I'm wrong.

Until Clausen ends up in the hands of a team NOT called the Bills or the Raiders, I'm not so sure it will matter. Either of them can trade up if they really want Clausen. I think Clausen is rated highly enough that they will be willing to sit him for no more than half a season behind a guy like Gradkowski or Trent Edwards, they won't want JC. Now if Clausen goes to, say, the Vikings with Detroit's second rounder, then I think we might be able to deal with the Bills or Raiders. Even if one of them gets McCoy, my sense is that teams might be more likely to treat him as a project QB who sits for a couple years. Then JC would seem like a real upgrade over their current starters.

I'm not sure the Browns are eager to make a decent offer for JC after getting Delhomme. And I'm sure the Rams expect Bradford to start right away.

I have said before that I thought Arizona would move on from Leinart, who I thought might already have lost that locker room and would need a fresh start. Who better to give it to him than Pete Carroll, who also needs a QB for the future (Charlie Whitehurst nothwithstanding)? What you are saying makes a lot of sense, I thought that Campbell would be a real good fit in Arizona. Maybe the year Campbell spent in Zorn's WCO helps sell Brad Childress on Campbell as Favre's successor, but they keep talking about how much TJackson has improved and how much they like him. Intersting.

I would be freakin thrilled if we ended up wiith a 3rd round pick...this draft is so deep...In my own selfish ways i want to keep JC...i feel so bad we never really gave JC the proper help a QB needs...I want him to stay...But if we get a 3rd for him, im all for it...

I just can't get interested in a night where the Skins have zero picks. I'll keep my eyes on Twitter, but ESPN ain't getting any ratings from me.

I'm not complaining, better McNabb than one pick tonight, IMO.

I think any team that wants Clausen probably has to trade with the Rams. There's a good chance he goes to the Vikings with the second pick.

For purposes of this thread, Clausen going to the Vikes would be huge for our chances to move Campbell.

i wouldn't say "good chance." i hope you're right... and i brought up the vikings as possible players at the qb position, but it sounds like they might stay put and grab the secondary help they missed out on by trading back.

Earlier today John Clayton said if there was any movement regarding JC it would likely be on Saturday. Which imo means no one thinks he's more than a back up or a stop gap regardless of who's infront of him...he's probably worth a late 4th or early 5th at best.

4-5th round.. maybe a sweetener in terms of a conditional 2011 pick.. that is the best we can expect, i think

The rams will almost surely trade their pick and consequentially Clausen will most likely be taken with the pick. Whoever gets him with that pick is getting a good deal. But we will need to package JC with another player if we want a second rounder. Either that or we trade AH for a second. As someone else pointed out, in a dream world, we trade AH to the rams for their pick, then trade it down. Additionally, we trade JC to someone else for a 3rd.

If you can't get a 3rd or maybe an early 4th, I likely wouldn't bother with a trade. I'd rather have JC here as a backup than a general 5th round pick. I guess it would depend on the 5th round pick. If they saw someone on the board who was a huge steal (i.e. someone rated a 2nd or 3rd and has fallen to the 5th) I might make the deal.

There have been some bizzaro trades involving QB's and multiple picks. we have seen third stringers move for multiple picks.

Denver swapped a 2nd, 3rd and 4th for number 25 last night to get Tim Tebow. Does anyone really believe he will be better than JC as a QB.

I would not be surprised if JC got us a 3rd round pick in a deal.

And it depends on your comfort with Rex. I know you and I have zero confidence in Rex, but perhaps Shanahan squared feel differently.

KC is already giving up on Matt Cassel after giving up a high pick for him last year? I seriously doubt that.

I think Campbell talentwise should fetch a late 2nd or early 3rd, but there don't seem to be a lot of teams that agree with me.

Agree. At least a 2nd for Haynesworth, and a 3rd for Campbell. If no one offers that, so be it, I'm keeping both of them.

Agreed...the only way I do it is if a guy with starting potential is available in that particular round like Selvish Capers, Wang, or a developmental QB with lots of upside like Crompton.
