There you are pumping gas. On the other side of the pump, you notice someone pumping gas with a lit cigarette dangling from their mouth.
Do you say anything to them?
This question was asked on a local radio station this morning. I thought it would be good for discussion.
Thoughts?
I probably wouldn't say anything myself. As most know, I'm not the confrontational type. I may add though that if my kids were with me, I'd be more inclined to say something. Yet, still can't say for sure if I would or not.

I think you'd have to say something. Even if it's just asking him for a cigarette lol. I haven't seen that much since the 80s. Folks kind of get the point about that. Thank you Ford Pinto!
That's said, it's comparatively hard to get gasoline to ignite. If the guy just left his car running, I wouldn't care. If he was smoking in the vehicle, I probably wouldn't care. If he was smoking overtop of the nozzle while pumping, well, then I'd care because dude is working up a Darwin award nomination. If he were doing that, I might be compelled to pull my phone out and start recording the soon-to-be crispy hilarity for the internets.

They mentioned this morning that it's not safe lighting a cigarette while pumping gas. But if it's already lit it's hard to ignite gasoline...:whoknows:

I would simply leave. It isn't worth trying to have a rational, intelligent conversation with someone like that.

Yeah, I would get the hell out of there. Although I would probably say something without giving the idiot a chance to respond.

Agreed unless I had the kid with me... Again, people are insane.
I might also try "spilling" som gas in their direction. :D

I quit six months ago but I don't think I ever smoked while pumping gas.
It is hard to light gas with a cigarette though. It's still dangerous because you are the one who will get burned. The tank isn't going to explode like a movie.

I pull out my handgun and shoot the guy.
I'd just leave.

I run a fueling operation at my work. Never had an issue there but then again we have a no smoking policy which states that you must be 100' from any of our buildings if you are smoking outside (this would put the person away from my pumps)............... Now I have been in situation where I've been at a service station and some guy started laying into another fellow for having a lit cigarette in his mouth while pumping gas. Guy got all embarrassed and put it out......... I always amazes me how many people have no common sense.

I'd remind them gently, and kindly (I mean who can resist mom?) that it's against the law. Most people are willing to respond the right way if you're nice about it. And if they don't, well then I'd stop pumping the gas and mosey on my way.

My momma used to always say "stupid is as stupid does".
I would definitely say something in a non-threatening way.

I'd walk up to the dude and ask him for a light while stating how hot it was outside. And then some snide crude remarks in my softest tone possible, just barely audible enough that he could hear them.

I smoke cigarettes, and if I EVER saw anyone smoking at a gas pump, I would first tell them adamantly to put it out, and if they refused, I would grab it out of their mouth and put it out myself. That's just a recipe for natural selection right there.
