View Full Version : A new head coach won't solve everything

We need a GM with a vision, who has control over personnel and the HC. A puppet like Cerrato who can't do squat without Snyder's say so won't make any difference, no matter who the coach is?

We need a Ron Wolf type GM to come in and run the show. If Dan Snyer truly loves our Redskins, then he would step back and let a football man run the show.

I really question who we could get to come coach out team after the circus of the last 4 years. No one with any credibility will come here under the current structure. Only an unproven college coach or an NFL coordinator looking to make a name for himself would accept the Redskins coaching job under the current setup.

I agree Robert. But I don't see Dan surrending that power anymore. He tried with Marty and didn't like it.

Robert, I could not possibly agree more. We might steal a good season here or there, but the Redskins will never become a great franchise again until they hire a real GM, a professional GM. Someone who has been living and breathing football every second of his life since the age of 14. There are those sorts of GMs out there. We should have one. We don't.

Which brings us to the age old question - who needs to have more power, the coach or the GM? When Gibbs was here it was the coach by far but was that the exception and not the norm??

Gibbs had more power than Beathard?

A GM would be great. Anybody who brings in Rob Johnson needs his head examined. Anybody hear Spurrier last night on him? He said Rob doesn't even know which side to look on plays where all 3 WRs are to one side?!

Another bad move was releasing Wilkinson.

I seem to remember the power being split between Gibbs/Beathard.... maybe I am wrong though.

Either way... I question if we will ever see good times under Snyder. (And he is Sooooo young!)

There was no official power divide between Beathard and Gibbs. Any disputes were taken to Jack Kent Cooke, who made a final decision. The break came in 1988 when Gibbs wanted to trade two first round draft picks for TB Gerald Riggs of the Atlanta Falcons and trade TB Mike Oliphant for TB Earnest Byner. Beathard thought Riggs was not worth two first rounders and would not be another John Riggins. Beathard was right on that one and Gibbs was wrong.

However, the trade of Mike Oliphant for Earnest Byner was one of the greatest in Redskins history. Oliphant was a scatback and a favorite of Beathard's, but Gibbs didn't like small tailbacks like Oliphant and never trusted him after he fumbled a kick [or a punt, can't quite recall] in a preseason game. Gibbs wanted him traded for Byner and Beathard opposed the proposed deal. In both instances, Cooke sided with Gibbs.

It was then that Beathard--who had hired Gibbs in the first place--knew that he was no longer the top personnel authority in the organization. After the end of the season, he resigned and went to work for NBC as an analyst for one year before taking over the San Diego Chargers. Charley Casserly was promoted by the Redskins to take Beathard's place, but it was understood by all that Gibbs had the final word on all personnel matters and pretty much decided what the team would do with its first round picks.

Two 1st rounders for Riggs?! What a rip!

And during the Beathard / Gibbs era:
How many division titles?
How many post season appearances?
How many trips to the Super Bowl?

How many "good times" talking it up after a win???
Would be nice to see a Coach /GM relationship that could duplicate that success!

(But in my heart, I doubt it will happen under the present regime!)

I say we just call Ron Wolf and get it over with. If Snyder really wants to win he would do this

Maybe Jimmy Johnson would like to take over the skins and stick it to Parcells and Jones

That would be the greatest thing next to Gibbs Returning

Danny thinks you can get a bunch of big names one year and win the Super Bowl. You don't make or break things in one season. It takes a few years to build a good team. He is clue less. I don't think he would get a GM. I don't believe a GM would come here anyways. Atleast a good one. The front office is definetly the problem and it trickles down from there.

Brett Man I like how you think. But we need Wolfe more than Jimmy.I think Wolfe and Spurrier would make a great team.Maybe Wolfe could recommend a new DC and OL coach too.
