NEW ORLEANS -- As Stephen Davis goes, so go the Carolina Panthers. And boy, was Davis going on yesterday.
Davis, who was held to 20 yards on 11 carries in the Panthers' loss to Tennessee last week, was back in form yesterday.
He rushed for 178 yards and two touchdowns as Carolina beat the New Orleans Saints 23-20 in overtime.
"We gave them a heavy dose of Stephen," said Carolina coach John Fox.
"He started fast and finished fast."
Davis has rushed for more than 100 yards five times this season, including 159 in Carolina's first game against the Saints. His teams are 19-4 when he breaks 100.
Davis had a key 34-yard run in overtime yesterday to set up John Kasay's 31-yard field goal for the victory that kept the Panthers atop the NFC South.
I wonder what would have happened had he stayed?

I bet Ramsey would not be as beat up as he has been. A strong runner would slow the blitz down and Davis is that runner. Trung Betts and anyone else on our roster does not even come close.
I remember someone laughed at me when I said Davis would have 1500 yards and 15 TDs in Carolina. I still stand by that

With Stephen we would probably have 2-3 more wins right now

but hey we have Trung and Betts, heck we should have kept Watson, he might have been better

In Carolina, they are "Believing in Stephen". Wish I could say that about us.

if he was here, he'd just be talking trade. he wouldnt be getting the ball enough anyway guys and thats the truth. spurrier did a great job of keeping the play calling balanced in the beginning of the season but has yet to get back to that.....

He might have been willing to go back to the run if davis was here as it would be working a whole lot better

I'll still be one of the apparently few people here who will say that releasing Davis was a good decision.

Just think how dangerous our offense would be with Davis. It's very sad.

I agree as well.

If it was a good decision, it is because of salary cap problems.

Well, that was one of the main reasons, GIG. And don't anyone come out and say "He would have renegotiated!" It's nice to think about, but the fact is that he didn't give any indication of that when the offseason rolled around.

He didn't give any indication JDS because everyone including my mother knew that he wasn't wanted by Spurrier.

I know. The reasons don't matter. The fact is that he didn't want to renegotiate.

I have to disagree that the reasons don't matter. Feeling wanted does make a difference.

I don't think it ever got as far as redoing his deal SS didn't want him and why would he want to stay. Sorry JDS, I have to disagee. Davis would have made this team a helluva lot better. We have jack at running back and I doubt it is goingt o get better. Betts might someday be good but I don't consider him anywhere near yet. Davis would have fit in any offense, I believe that to be true.

Woulda, shoulda, coulda, We ain't got him...they do !!!!!!!!
Amd I'm not sure that even if we did still have Mr Davis that are W & L 's would be any better...................
(Tho' I would think the games would be a hell of a lot more exciting)
just my 2 cents.

To me, it's a choice between Davis and Coles, Thomas, Fiore, Bowen, Canidate, and Morton. A few of the free agents would have gotten in there, probably Hall, maybe a lineman or two, but really, nearly all of the big acquisitions would be wearing different uniforms. I'd take them over Davis right now.

What numbers are you thinking in regards to Davis JDS? Look at it this way. Picture him here with the same deal that he signed with Carolina and remove Fiore and Morton (too rich of a deal for what he does) from the picture. The others are still do-able.

I agree with Kenny, we could have signed Davis to his Carolina deal and done without Morton and Fiore and still had a back that would have run very nicely behind Thomas or run a nice play fake as Coles heads for the end zone( If he remembers where it is :D)

I highly doubt we would have been able to get Thomas or Coles in here. Davis' contract was gonna take up 11 million in cap space this year. We didn't have that to begin with.

Right JDS, but if he stayed he would not have stayed at 11 million. He would have had to redo his deal.

And I'm saying he wouldn't have, therefore meaning that we would have either kept him at that ridiculous number or cut him.

Remember the movie "Major League", when the fans were arguing about the ball being too high to be a home run? Well, listening to this argument about Davis leads me to that movie and I want to quote:
"Who gives a shit, it's (he) gone!"
