View Full Version : Observations from my day at the game ...

Well I finally got to go to a regular season game, its been at least 10 years since the last one. Right up front I'd like to mention that the band is EXCELLENT. I remember the marching band being ok but you guys are really notably excellent. The Funky Four did their thing, got to love it! As for the rest of the game I have to tell you that while I loved the experience of taking my son and "being at the game" there were a few too many things that really detracted from enjoying it, even beyond the score. First my view was obscured by a f**king handrail of all things. Funny they didn't mention that with the tickets. Second I paid $3 each for two "Soft Pretzels" that obviously were baked originally sometime during the Eisenhower administration but were nicely complemented by a $4 (large) soda that tasted ... well nothing like the brand of soda it claimed to be, in fact it tasted nothing like anything I wanted to drink. Fortunately the beer tasted just right, but considering that I could have bought a case of it at the grocery store for the same price as the 12 ouncer I got at the stadium I can't say that I was pleased. All in all I am seriously considering writing the Redskins and asking for my money back for the poor quality of the food and drink, a modest $16 investment to be sure but I think its only fair that they stand behind their product, and in that case they should be more than ready to return my money for the crap they provided. I write the $21 for the one-size-fits all Redskins hat for my son off as just the usual gouge from going to a pro-sports game. Note if you wouldn't mind that this has nothing to do with the quality of play or the outcome of the game.

As for the game I do have a couple of observations. First I think that the view from the heavens that I enjoyed (I actually did enjoy the view from Section 430) make a few things clear that you will not see on TV. Matt Bowen is easily the best player on the defense. Champ Bailey is absolutely OWNED by Horn. The man was open ... then entire game. I assume the "Property Of Horn" tatoo is probably hidden by his boxers. LaVar for what ever reason has almost no impact on the game, honestly I can't understand why the usual news is that Bailey is the best corner in the league and Arrington is a monster. Neither is the case, both are decidely ordinary. Bruce Smith on the other hand is not decidely ordinary. Bruce Smith will have to improve to be a non-factor! Let me ask each of you, how many games have the Skins lost by 7 or fewer points? How many times have you heard or said yourself "if only for a couple plays the Skins would have won..." The only time Bruce Smith got close to the quarterback he hit him late for a personal foul and helped keep the winning drive alive. Which reminds me ... is anyone here excited or proud or anything positive about Smith's sack record? Frankly I don't give a rat's ass and I never have. Shouldn't a starting quality defensive end who's specialty is rushing the QB have more sacks than I can count on one hand by the 12th game in the season? For the love of the Skins Mr. Snyder, get the hell rid of Mr. Smith!!

Personally I don't blame Snyder for anything other than not personally knowing what it takes to have a "winning" team. He's searching and he's being suckered by the media and promotional positions of players ... and coaches. Spurrier hasn't adapted and over come ... Bailey is not the best CB in the league ... Arrington is not a MONSTER ... Jacobs doesn't even play let alone make a difference in a game.

More on that ... "if only for one or two plays the Skins would have won" theme ... how many of those plays were actually mental f**k-ups? How many personal fouls do the Skins have? How many off-sides does Smith have? How many illegal receiver down-field call? Those are the plays that the Skins need to NOT be happening. And those are the things that the Head Coach should be taking care of. Head coaching isn't about being an offensive genius (or not) ... its about instilling a team persona ... a corporate culture ... SS team personality is "hey we're sloppy and it just plain doesn't matter" ... these guys make mental errors by the dozens and they could well be the plays that we needed to win the 6 or some close games that are making the difference between celler dwellers and playoff contenders.

The O-line ... nice game. The back-up QB ... very nice game love the mobility and the quick decisions. The Jets-Skins ... damn everyone of them a positive ... nice FO decisions to a man! The complete lack of a pass rush ... you know if there was some reason to think that wouldn't have been the case this season then you could chalk it up to bad luck ... but anyone who didnt see it coming ... is completely BLIND ... shame Taylor Jacobs can't play Defensive End and rack up .... oh lets say a modest 8 sacks or so ... (IDOITS!)

I want to go into how the Skins are getting it from behind by the refs ... couple maybe more pass interference calls that don't get called ... then the BS call on Bailey to hand the Saints a game winning TD (that was so bogus!) ... but you know what ... it really doesn't matter because the Skins have screwed themselves more than the refs have.

So ... hey ... thanks for the good tunes and the funky dancing and hopefully I'll get back to see you guys again. Sure hope next season is better than this one.

my day at the game - it was COLD.......
Brokenstriker, you make a good point about the prices and from what I understand it's pretty much the same around the league. Too bad, Danny doesn't do some quality checks or get input from those of us who attend the game. ............ Kind of makes me wonder, IF he doesn't care (as the owner) they why should I. ..... (well, I know the answer to that - I been a Skins fan longer than he's be alive)

Hey, at least you weren't in a section like mine where we have TWO jerks that own season tickets and come to every game to cheer against the Redskins. One guy is bearable, the other a complete and utter prick. Of course, he's a Cowboys fan I'm sure raised in either Manassas or Waldorf. The other, less offensive hater, is a Steelers fan. My only consolation was their inability to talk decent smack and the fact that both their team's lost.

Broken, I was there as well and an not reaslly argue your points.

Lavar: True yesterday, he had little to no impact.

Champ: Please. He sucked it up big time yesterday and in a contract year, am simply baffled at his play quality.

Hasselbeck: very solid, i agree. He seems to be very comfortable moving in the pocket, especially when he steps up intot he pocket tomake the throw, somehting I have not seen from ram. Imagine, with ram's brain, arm strength, if he had the pocket and blitz awareness that Hass does how good he woudl be.

Trotter to me had a damn fine game. 10 tackles, was all over the place. Trotter had an outstanding game yesterday.

Agree as well on the OLine. They played a great game, protection and running wise.

Folks, lets not forget to give it up for the youngster, Derrick Dockery. Fiore's injury is turning into a blessing in disguise, simply because Dockery is learnign and growing with thisLine. That will be a super benefit next season.

Good post Borkenstriker!

Agreed, agreed with calling out Champ and LA and also right on about SS and DS not being able to build a "winning team". We can just hope and pray for the future I guess. Denny Green!

Any Cowboys fan that comes to every Redskins game to root against the home team? Dave, you should tell the nearest concession stand to piss in his beer.

He's soooo frickin obnoxious too. He brought paper bags and tried to hand them out to Skins fans. He put one on hoping he'd get on tv mistaken for one of us. I quickly tore it off of him. I have seats 1 and 2, he's in 5 and an ederly couple sit in 3 and 4. I honestly think he's the reason they have only been to one game this year. The couple that sat there yesterday got plenty of beer spilled on them by this moron.

there was one lame girlie-man bedecked and bedazzled in NO Saints crap who insisted on standing and raising #1's with each hand in front of me ... he was one of the reasons I kinda wished my son wasn't with me ... I'd have bought 2 $6 beers just to pour one on him ...

the other reason ... this "comfortably" drunk lil' darlin who just cruised by and plopped in the empty seat next to me and leaned on me the entire 4th quarter

I love the piss in the beer plan for the obnoxious anti-skins fans ... but do you think Dan would charge $7 for it?

I hate going to games where there are obnoxious fans rooting against your team...this is why I never go to Orioles/Yankee games any more.

I also very rarely eat at any stadium. The food stinks and is too expensive, this is why I love a good tailgate party.

As for players:

I thought Bailey STUNK yesterday. How many of you think he's playing bad on purpose?

I, as you all know, love Bowen!!!

and as far as Bruce...Maybe it'll be against Dallas, that would look great in the record books!!!

I was there yesterday as well and while I agree that the food is over priced I don't think it's that bad. The BBQ pork and BBQ Chicken sandwiches are good, unfourtunetly they're seven dollars.

One thing that I noticed The Redskins were introduced as a team (The saints too) I (ever the optimist) suggested that the team was circling the wagons and trying to unite. While someone in my section thought that The players would have been booed had they come out one at a time. I was wonder what your oppinions were on this.

As for the game itself. . .

Bailey had a lousy game this week but everybody has an off game now and then, BUT NOT IN A CONTRACT YEAR. This guy needs to step it up if he wants his money

LaVar was not at his best this week either.

I like hasselbeck, but I think that Patrick Ramsey is the QB of the future. God I hope we don't have a controversy brewing here.

O-line was solid this week, do these guys not like Ramsey or what?

D-line these guys need help. Some of them have improved Lional Dalton comes to mind. Some of them are just awful Martin Chase comes to mind. I think that Bernard Holsey (a.k.a. Bernard Who's He?) had gotten better.

Darrell Russell, does he play?

Bruce Smith, I think that my Grandmother has a better chance of getting to the quarterback

that's my two cents.
