Fred Smoot is a solid cornerback, Randy Thomas is a good offensive guard, and Chris Samuels can be an exceptional left tackle. His performance has fallen off markedly since his Pro Bowl year of 2001, though. Privately, teammates come to Samuels' defense and say the changes he has been asked to make in his technique do not suit him well.

Fine. But if Samuels, out with a knee injury now, wants to be a great, or even a very good, player, at some point he has to tell the coaching staff, "I can do things your way and continue to struggle, or I can do things my way and give us a chance to succeed."

I think he needs to stop playing with the roller skates on.

He also needs to stop going out drinking and smoking with Cowboy fans which I saw last year.

He also needs to get out of this horrible system.

Blocking is blocking. Sure there can be some effect made by the system but when a guy runs around him, it ain't the system.

Sure there is Dave. System change techniques and certain lineman are not geared toward that technique. If that is the case, and Samuels is not geared toward this scheme and system of blocking, then why did we draft him? BECAUSE of a lack of any PLANNING by this franchise.

Lineman aren't geared towards one system or another. Good linemen are always good. I agree that the system could be the reason for the penalties but it is not the reason he's getting beat like a rented mule. Guys are RUNNING AROUND HIM. That's his fault and his fault only.

I'm with Mark on this one. Jansen has had a down year, too. I can't believe they've both gone downhill at such a young age and at the same time. The audibles are confusing the entire offense--linemen, wideouts, running backs, quarterbacks. The reason the offensive line has looked better the last two weeks is that they've only audibled twice in those two games.

Jansen hasn't looked nearly as bad as Samuels. As I said, some of the problems can be blamed on the system but Samuels is getting flat out beat.

I thought Jansen got abused through much of the season. He faces inferior pass rushers, though. Except this week, when he'll go up against Michael Strahan.

If you look at Jansen in the Past 5 or so weeks, he has stepped up his game. Samuels has not. Now there is a no-name journeyman in his spot doing a better job than he does. I think Samuels may be to Small, and too slow. Guys are running around him, through him and over him. HE also doesn't have the nasty streak that Jansen has. I think he is way overrated but I do think Jansen is a good Tackle. I'm down on Samuels at this moment. Hopefully he returns to his pro-bowl form.

He has. I agree. it's just that Samuels has become a favorite as far as criticism is concerned. And you are correct about the inferior rushers. Most of the best pass rushers do come from the QBs blindside, and with the majority of the league's QBs being right handed, there you have it.

Watching Samuels this year, he looks like he's bee n injured all year. He doesnt get out of his stance as fast as he use to and he doesnt get the leverage he got over the last two years. I think he's had a knee injury all year.

Samuels IS having a problem this year and it's not the system. His technique has been horrible and again I can’t (maybe you can) blame it’s the system. The fundamentals of pass blocking do not change from system to system. …… Now that being said, I think he’s much in the same situation as Ramsey. A injury was/is nagging at him and he’s was/is not letting on to it. The injury he’s sustain now is not related I’m afraid. IF he does not get himself 100% healthy – by next year he’ll be let go – I can see this coming.

Maybe Jansen has been manhandled, but I still noticed it far more from Samuels.

I've been complaining about Samuels as much as anyone here. I just think the guy has taken several large steps back since his 2nd year in the league. He just hasn't seem to develop, at what point do you stop making the same mistakes??? I do think the system is a large part of it, BUT you can't blame it all on the system. At somepoint the players have to take some responsibility. When I've watched Samuels he isn't just being beaten because he's miss reading the zone blocking scheme, he has repeatidly been beaten by speed DEs. He hasn't looked good in man on man blocking. Ramsey has taken a beating this year and if Samuels can't improve I think the team has to seriously start looking elsewhere to get someone to protect Ramsey's blindside or atleast get an old veteran to start pushing Samuels for playing time.

Maybe they're asking him to change his mechanics which could definately affect his performance if it doesn't fit him. I'm with Spence on this as well, there is a flaw in the system and it needs to be corrected.

He was better when he had more meat on him.
