Who is having a better year....and why?

Bailey is having a better year, but Smoot is having the best year he's ever had. Perhaps the presence of better safeties has helped him. Smoot had injury problems last year [and this year, maybe he's not terribly durable], but this year he has been able to play well despite them. Last year, Smoot was awful even before he was injured.

Unlike most people here, I think Bailey has had a good season, though he was not good last week. He still plays the run very well, which Smoot does not, and he still takes the other team's best receiver every play and every week.

Smoot is cheaper, though, and will be a lot cheaper next year. If you think you can get by with bargain basement cornerbacks, you should let Bailey go and hang on to Smoot. In my opinion, Smoot is like Peerless Price: He's excellent as a number two but will be badly exposed as a number one.

Ditto. Almost exactly what I would have said!

I agree.... Think of the kind of secondary we could have if we had a pass rush

Can someone confirm or deny that Bailey has had an injury problem this year (knees maybe).

Can't remember where I heard it, but I think it would explain somethings.

I think Bailey is still the best on the team, but he isn't having a "Bailey Season". Teams are trying him more and he is not having as much luck as previous years.

Bailey has a fractured wrist and something with his shoulder, I forget exactly what. And I'll pretty much ditto what Spence said, minus the part about bargain basement corners. I think if we traded Bailey for a far more effective D-line our defense would be better off.

Agree ... and if there is a starter in the NFL without a serious injury by the 12 game of the season ... but still playing ... its a kicker or a punter. If Bailey is so hurt that he can't perform ... then they should put someone else in there ... he's on the field ... so he should perform. Sorry ... no sympathy ... Bauman isn't that bad ... if he's hurt ... sit him down

Neither are playing pro-bowl caliber IMO but whose having a better year - Man, that changes week to week. I'd say right now they pretty close and I wouldn't lean either way.

I like the way Silky Johnson has played this year, and I think he's a team player. People say he talks a lot, but it must be mostly in practice. He doesn't cry to the refs or stir up stuff in the press, is not a bad tackler, and will play when he's hurt. I honestly think he's having a little better year than Bailey ( this year ). Mark me down as a Fred Smoot fan, and I hope he's with the Skins for many years to come.

I agree 100%. don't get me wrong, I love Smoot and Bailey but man, Smoot is a warrior. I just love that guy. I like Champ too but I think Smooty is having a tad better year. Both are great corners IMHO. Unfortunately Both can be beaten. I guess if there is no Pass Rush, even Pat Fisher and Darrel Green can be beaten.

Smoot is having a better year IMO. Smoot took alot of heat int he off-season, went through trade rumors, and came out and played more than solid this year. To me, in a contract year, Champ has simply been disappointing.

Champ wants to much money and he wants out. I would like to see him pick off more balls than he does. Even when they hit him in the hands he drops em. If the QB threw at Champ as much as they throw at Smoot it would be ugly. All he has is a really big REPUTATION. That being said I would like to have him if we could keep him without breaking the bank.

Champ is not a $20 million dollar shut-down corner.

The thing about corners is: if one is having a good year, you really don't know it because their name isn't mentioned. I haven't heard Smoot alot this year, I've heard alot of Bailey at times. Keep Smoot (cheaper) and let's get some help in the secondary and DL.

keep Smoot and sign Antoine Winfield the best tackling CB in the league. his tackling alone is worth signing him.

pick up a 1st rd. pick for champ draft a DL and possibly K. Jones in the 1st rd.

This question that I posed would have to be qualified (and quantified) by some interesting factors. On one hand, Smoot seems to me to be having a better year and not getting burnt as much for long passes as Bailey has..........but Bailey has been playing HURT all season, plus he (Bailey) goes up against #1 WR's and Smoot goes up to #2 WR's. Hmmm. I still like the way that Smoot has played THIS year (especially after last year).

the fact still remains that Bailey wants to occupy a HUGE chunk of our salary cap, and we can't allow that and still be competitive. I'd HATE to see him in another uni, but sometimes you have to do what is best for the overall team.

You're right... Winfield is an outstanding open-field tackler, but Bauman has better coverage skills.

If we had any kind of pass rush, it would be all too evident how good both of our corners are. not many corners can hold a quality wr in check for more than 5 seconds.

But surely the best cover corner in the league can, right? ;)

I think one on one, Champ is having a better year then Smoot. Champ is covering the best WR on the field... and shutting them down 90% of the time. The question wasn't "Is Champ worth his money more then Smoot is worth his?" Champ is by far a better talent then Smoot... is tougher... faster... stronger... and has proven that for five years.

Smoot has gotten burned on some stupid plays as well. He is a solid #2 guy... but could never do what Champ is expected to do week after week.

If we want to discuss value... we should start a new thread.

Yeah, value is a DIFFERENT thing all together. Regardless of the outcome (with the Champ negotiations), I want some CB who not only has talent, but a POSITIVE attitude and a lot of fight (like Coles). If Champ doesn't really want to be here, I say release him (with compensation, of course). As a matter of fact, we need to release EVERYONE who has a bad attitude and doesn't want to wear the Burgundy & Gold (IMO).
