What do you think (good or bad) is/was the biggest sports story of the year of 2003?

The Lakers going out in the second round.

Mike Tyson not getting arrested.

It's got to be the Kobe Bryant arrest. No other sports story all year so transcended sports itself and invaded the mainstream of American culture. Millions of people who had little or no idea who Kobe Bryant is now know his name.

I thought the Dennehy/Dotson/Bliss/Baylor story was the biggest this year.
I also found the Bison Dele/Miles Daboard murder-suicide intruiging as well.

I was about to go with Spence and say the Koby Bryant case.
but I now think Kenny is right. That mess at Baylor was the biggest.
My honorable mention is the Don Zimmer/Pedro Martinez incident in the ACLS Championship game.
Oh yeah...the Sammy Sosa "corked bat" was a pretty big story.

The Kobe Trial was the biggest sports story of the year, unfortunately.
Another story overlooked this year was Martha Burke vs. Hootie Johnson at the Masters.
Hootie is the Man. He never backed down at all! By the way, can anyone get Masters tickets?

To me the Kobe thing was the same old same old...I think Annika Sorenson was pretty big deal
Annika was given the invite, the woman who played in the GHO earned her way into the tournament. That is impressive.

Here in the US it has to be Kobe. But outside of the US had to be David Beckham going from Manchester United to Real Madrid. Just because it was so unexpected.

Isnt it sad that we pay more attention to an athletes mistakes then their talent.

It wasn't unexpected over here. From the minute Fergie planted that boot on Becks' head, not to mention being dropped for the CL Qtr Final with Real, he was out of there...

No she didn't. They let her play from the women's tees in qualifying.

Yeah, and the only sports we take seriously are the ones where we know we can kick ass on the rest of the world, like baseba...oops, never mind.

Lets be fair here for a minute. The original question of the thread, I think, was biggest sports story of the year 2003. And the event mentioned above happened in the second month of 2004.
Additionally, the story really is only about one of the above mentioned items, since only one was exposed, and not two. So the singular, and not plural version could be a leading contender for 2004 top story consideration.

My 3-year old loves this gag when he talks about his "Fore-head" and I talk about his "Four-heads". It's always good for a couple of laughs with the ankle biters.

One of the most tragic was the death of Marc-Vivien Foe of Cameroon who had a heart attack during a Confederations Cup match last summer. Here was a man in seemingly peek condition just dropping down in the middle of the pitch. The image remains with me to this day.

who else likes the prospects of trading down in the draft? i'm thinking there are 3 QB's, # wide receivers, left tackle, safety and d tackle in the top 10. that number 5 pick is gonna look really good to some team when the picks start going off the board.trading down out of the top 10 will save millions in contract too.

I watched the NFL Network last night and was reminded of an awesome story that most have already forgotten. It may not be the "biggest" story of the year, but probably the most amazing...
Only ONE day after the passing of his father, Brett Favre actually decided to play in the Oakland vs. Packers Monday Night Football game. Prior to the start of the game, he dedicated his performance to his father, who was a big inspiration to him and was instrumental in helping Brett become the HOF-bound quarterback he is today.
What does he do?
He goes out and passes for 399 yards and 4 Touchdowns with a 73.3 % completion rate and passer rating of 154.9. (158.3 is the highest rating you can achieve)
That win kept the Packer's playoff hopes alive and eventually got them the NFC North title, with a little help from their friends in Arizona. :D

We need to unsticky this thread and start a new one for 2004. I think this thread is now merging stories from two different years.
