View Full Version : How drafting Sean Taylor will help our D-line.

Here's what I had in mind. By taking Sean Taylor, it will allow us to do several different things that our defense has not been able to do in several years:

1) It will allow us to bring another player, either a LB or a Safety into the box, provding extra help for our D-line and run defense.

2) Possibility of different blitz packages, more LB, Safety, and CB blitzes.

3) It would be a little easier for us to play a 3-4, and including more LB blitzes, if we don't get any substantial help on the D-line.

4) We'll have one of the best Safety's in the game in a few years, if not the best, for years to come.

Can't agree with that. Helping the D-line means only one thing - getting better talent. Bottomline. Just about every so-called football expert will tell you, you start at the D-line and work back. I even had a chance to ask Dr. Walker that on a call-in to his radio show (John Thompson show) last year because of our apparent weakness on the D-line. We have (had) an excellent LB & DB group and I asked him if that could make up for an average (which I don't even think ours qualifies as) D-Line. .. His answer real quick was "No Way!"

In no way am I trying to say that we don't need to address the weakness of our D-line. Probably more than any other position. But with this being a weak draft for D-Linemen I think we should address the D-line through FA instead of the draft. Drafting someone like Wilfork or Harris will do nothing for us next year and probably won't the year after that either. D-Linemen, especially DT are one of the hardest positions to play in the league as a rookie. We need impact now, not two years from now.

As far as Doc Walker goes, he's in that same mold as Theisman, "what I would do", and "if I were the coach". When nobody really cares what the two of them think, or have to say. Doc Walker was an interchangeable part on a great team. He was lucky to be where he was.

One thing is that if the D-Line is not getting to the quarterback and he has 6 or 7 seconds to throw the ball it doesn't matter if you have the best defensive backfield in the game. So I would say get DL with 1st pick, get best RB hopefully one of the top 3 will fall into the 5th pick in round 2, then get the best TE in round 3. Then we can fill the rest in free agency.

I wouldn't say "nobody" ....... these guys were part of a great team that took the Skins to a couple of Superbowl. YOU may not like Walker or Theisman but they PLAYED the game and for me, I'll always listen to what they have to say when it comes to our Skins. ............ And as far a D Walker being an interchangable player - maybe so BUT he was a Joe Gibbs type of player and you better get use to seeing alot MORE of those types coming aboard.
