wow-i dont think i would want any other person to be our DB coach. Besides he carries the respect of many players on the team and should be able to help fine tune some of our DB's.....

Article said his exact duties are still being ironed out. Perhaps he will be doing something else in addition to DB coach, which is the logical assumption.
As an FYI, I don't think this move would be possible without Gibbs coaching. I just don't see Darrell working for another coach.

I've always though DG had alot to offer as a coach but knew he was really focus on his after football career. ........ Funny the affect that a great coach can have on his former players. ....... Heard an interview with Gary Clark and he's ALL fired up. Wanted to suit up again and play for JGs.

The article reads that Green will be A defensive backs coach, not THE defensive backs coach. Some teams have more than one defensive backs coach. Looks like the Redskins might be going in this direction. Not a bad idea, really, since Green has no coaching experience. Probably smart to pair him with a more experienced secondary coach.
Sort of makes me laugh, though. It wasn't too long ago when Marty Schottenheimer was taking Darrell Green aside, telling him he didn't know how to play the position, and then instructing him in the fine art of backpedalling--in front of the entire Redskins team.
What does Joe Gibbs know about Darrell Green that Marty Schottenheimer did not?
Lots.

By the way, I love the return of Bubba Tyer. He was always the most popular Redskin with the players.

Ummmm He's got a couple of SB Rings. ..... Of course after Darrell showed Marty how you put them on, I think he shut up too.

Now isn't this interesting?
The article actually mentions it, but one thing I remember from years past, was different Backs saying stuff like, "Darrell Green really taught me a lot."
"Darrell Green took me aside and showed me some things."
Etc...Etc... seems as if Darrell had been quielty coaching for many years!

Great to see Bubba back. Anyone know what Dan Riley the strength coach is up to? He would also be great to have back.

Um .. no .. I'm saying many people, including yourself, who wanted Marty gone and Spurrier in, still take shots at Marty despite the fact that he had the team moving in the right direction and Spurrier ruined it -- now Gibbs has to come in and clean up the floridians mess .. big surprise.

I'm thankful now that we suffered through the last few years. If either of those coaches succeed in the least, we don't get Joe back.

I'm a Marty basher and I am glad he was axed. He's doing a stellar job in San Diego.

Look at the bright side . . . If Marty didn't get run out of town AND if Spurrier didn't suck ass . . . then we wouldn't be getting Gibbs back . . . They all did us a favor

Marty has not had a winning season since 1997, when his 13-3 team wimped out in its first playoff game even worse than the Chiefs did this year. In fact, Marty has not won a playoff game since 1993. That's ten freaking years.
Marty's record from 1998-2003: 27-37. Logical conclusion: Has-been.

Ford, anyone who dresses down and tries to get rid of Darrell Green and fires Russ Grimm has no concept of the Tradition of the Washington Redskins. Marty is a Playoff Choker.....A Place he will never visit again.

im not sure if this can get any better....my favorite redskins of all-time, joining my favorite coach of all-time to help coach my favorite team. i think if DGs involved in any capacity of the team, its a big plus. it'll be nice to see darrell on the sidelines again......

I know I am going to get ripped for this but are you kidding... Green always played with poor technique.. He was the best because he could make up for his mistakes with his speed. Unfortunatly he can't teach his superhuman speed...

Thank you .. not to mention the fact that any comments suggesting Marty was trying to get rid of Green are rediculous and that he utilized him well as a nickel back.
Spence can give misleading statistics ignoring the fact that Marty was out of coaching for years, and say he hasnt been in the playoffs for x number of years .. that's fine .. but if you want to play with statistics how about the fact that marty had one losing season his entire career. Spence supported bringing spurrier in, who was 2 for 2 in his attempts to complete abysmal sub .500 seasons. Not to mention the fact that Marty cleaned up the salary cap mess left for him with big contracts like Stubblefield, Carrier, Deion, etc and was handed Jeff George as his starting QB. Marty went 8-8 with Tony Banks .. enough said.

Whether you like Marty or not, he was not a good fit in Washington from the moment he was hire. You might have a point Ford, about him doing some house cleaning and yes that did benifit us some. As far a heading us in the right direction, who knows ..... going 8-8 is not much of an indicator either way. HELL, Norv had us in the playoffs but still had this team heading in the wrong directionl. ......... Regardless of the past, the future is very bright, wouldn't you both agree (Ford, Spence) ???????

I do not think Green had 20 years in the NFL and to the Hall of Fame on speed alone.
Spence

Ford, please calm down. You're personalizing this, which is something you should try not to do. You're angry and emotional. The firing of Marty Schottenheimer still enrages you. I understand and I sympathize, even if I don't agree. I'm not sure why you appear to believe that I am responsible for Marty's short tenure here in Washington. I assure you I have no more influence with Dan Snyder than you do.
You assert that Marty has only had one losing season his entire career. That was true--until this season. He has now had two losing seasons his entire career. Both of those losing seasons have come within his last four coaching years. He has posted zero winning seasons in those last four coaching years.
I also cannot agree with you about Jeff George. Marty had an entire offseason to find an alternative quarterback. He did nothing until well into training camp, when he brought in Tony Banks. He also adopted an offensive system which was completely unsuited to Jeff George's somewhat dubious talents. Marty screwed up the quarterback position completely.
I'm also not sure why you focus on what you believe is my approval of the hiring of Spurrier? [You're sort of right and sort of wrong. I supported Spurrier over Schottenheimer, but Spurrier was hardly my first choice. Since both Spurrier and Schottenheimer have both posted 12-21 records since Marty left DC, it appears it probably would not have made any difference anyway.] The point I made, which is valid, is that I find the hiring of Green as some sort of assistant coach a satisfying reversal of Marty's crude attempt to intimidate Redskins players by bullying Darrell Green publicly. It was base and classless and the fact that neither Spurrier or Schottenheimer have been any good the last two years is not relevant to that point.

For the first part of Darrell's career he certainly relied on speed and not on his somewhat mediocre technique. Green was a Pro Bowl player in 1997, one of the best years of his career. He wasn't getting it done on speed by then.

One losing season in all those years and no Super Bowls. That kind of speaks more to me than anything else.

What Marty did to D. Green in training camp 3 seasons ago was ridiculous. You can't coach basic techniques to a 19 year vet. Hell...at that point, Green had been a player longer than Marty had been a head coach. Maybe Green could have taught him a thing or two about coaching and respect. Heck...at least he could have told Marty what it is like to win a Superbowl.
As Spence said...Marty tried to bully Green...and instead of gaining respect for it, he lost it...
Marty is WAYYYYYY past his prime, and should think about hanging it up.

Exactly what I would have said!!
Why would you go by a point of view that older players are exempt from improving their game. Darrell took it like a man, unlike Bruce .. and if you actually payed attention to what him and marty said you would know there were no hard feelings .. in fact towards the end of the season they were pretty chummy .. Bruce on the otherhand, just bitched and whined to the media. But the anti-marty crew, spence included, defended him then, and finally admitted that he was worthless when he continued his griping under spurrier. Stop rewriting history and creating emotions darrell never really expressed.
