Ok, so what exactly is Coy Gibbs going to be doing for the 'Skins? Is he a glorified secretary? Will he be spell-checking the offensive playbook? Making sure the headsets are set to the right frequency? :)
Seriously - does someone have a good description of what someone in that position would do? I realize it is the entry-level position on the staff, but was curious if he will be doing anything meaningful...

You are probably not too far off. He'll be an assistant to the HC as well as OC and your right, there will be alot of that clerk/assistant/secretarial/ task jobs. ..... BUT HEY, if it works in NASCAR as part of the Gibbs Team formula and proved to be sucessful, I'm all for it.

His job will be to follow Joe around and say helpful things like Great work, Dad and They'll never be able to stop that one, coach!.

I think "quality control" means that dad has control and the quality part is that Joe won't have to worry about his boy driving a Nascar truck anymore.

Actually Coy will be a student and will be massaged into the next redskins HC when Joe hangs it up. His job will be to learn everything from dad at first and then start taking on bigger responsibilities later.

I guess we all need someone to massage our ego. I think I need to find my own Vinny.

Can you provide some documentation on that? :D

Coy Gibbs was a helluva football player. He played for DeMatha HS and made the Big 33 Game as a Linebacker. He went on to play at Stanford. He was undersized for the position , but had the mentality and the heart...traits I believe he gets from his Dad.
I have no problem with the Nepotism here. It's certainly no worse than bringing on Steve Spurrier, Jr. or asking existing DC Ray Rhodes to take a pay cut so that Marty could bring in his baby brother Kurt.
I believe Coy will be an asset, and his job will be to drink up everybit of knowledge he can from his Pops.

Keino, I also remember Coy Gibbs at Stanford during the early 90's. He hurt his knee at some point and missed a while, but he obviously had toughness, something that he could relay onto some of the guys on the defense. I heard he was going to be an assistant linebacker coach on the staff.

It takes decades to turn a coach into a head coach. Most head coaches start coaching, in some form, in their early 20s, unless they had a long career in the NFL. Coy Gibbs didn't play in the NFL and he's only just now taking up coaching in his early 30s. And I think it is probably fair to say that he's only coaching because his dad is back in the NFL. If there has been a get that Coy Gibbs fella in here, pronto! movement among NFL general managers then I must have missed it.
I can see Russ Grimm or Gregg Williams taking over for Joe Gibbs in five years. Coy Gibbs? Not a chance.

Remember that it was being more involved with his sons which led Joe to take a break from coaching before. I think this is the same sort of move... not that Coy will actually impact anything at all... just to give Joe and excuse for late hours.
Coy had announed to the family that he was interested in returning to coaching... so this is a nice opportunity for him. I dot see him being molded into anything really... but what better way to get your foot in the door then with dear old Dad.
I bet this was a previso during the Snyder discussions.

Other NFL OQC coaches (past & present):
Tampa: Jim Payne
Vikings: Randy Hanson
Seahawks: Gary Reynolds
49ers: Jason Tarver
Cowboys: David Lee
Anyway you get the point...and did you know there was such a thing as a Defensive quality control coach as well?
Here's what I could find as far as a definition of the position:
(Tom) Landry also was the first to employ a coach for quality control. Ermal Allen would analyze game films and chart the tendencies of the opposition for the Cowboys in the 1970s. That gave Landry an edge in preparation, because he knew what to expect from his opponent based on down and distance. Now every NFL team has a quality-control coach, and most have two.

The Redskins had a defensive quality control coach recently. His name escapes me at the moment, but he was an older fellow with many, many years as a defensive coordinator. Worked for Don Shula, I believe. Someone will recall the name.

I think this position is another one of those edges that are utilized by the Vet coaches.

Paul Guenther OQC
But no real defined DQC... was it Ken Clarke? His title was Assistant Def. Line

The title of Offensive Quality Control is one of the reasons Gibbs is having a hard time prying assitants away from other teams. The NFL invoked that rule last year to prevent teams from hiring assistants away by giving them bogus titles like..................Offensive Quality Control.

Who cares, honestly? Not being crass or anything, but the reality is that we have the return of the "lord of the rings"......Joe Freakin' Gibbs.

I"m sure that one of the many factors that led Joe to return to coaching was that his son also wanted to get an opportunity to coach. And Joe is able to provide it for him, which is what every father would love to be able to do. I'm sure Joe will keep him plenty busy. Also, Coy is a good racecar driver, but I'm sure his wife (and parents) would prefer he play it a little safer and get out of from behind the wheel. Coaching is tough, but not as tough as crashing into the wall at 180 mph.
