If you believe Dan Pompei of the Sporting News.

Maybe we shouldn't be so shocked at Joe Gibbs' decision to return to the NFL. Just one year ago, he expressed real interest in returning to the league as a head coach. In fact, he had extensive talks with Lions president Matt Millen about taking over in Detroit. At the time, the only thing that stopped him was that his wife was not on board with the idea. Over the past year, Gibbs apparently did some of his best coaching in convincing Pat Gibbs that this was the right move. …

I hadn't heard this before now.

Hmmm. I wonder. I don't doubt Gibbs had discussions with the Lions, but taking over that roster and working under Matt Millen must have been a powerful dissuading factor.

I can't imagine that type of coaching environment would be tempting to bring a three time super bowl winner out of retirement.

Moving to Detroit isn't exactly a draw either.
