Barker was a major dissappointment last season ... I can't imagine a scenario where he plays for the Redskins next season. Even if he punts well in pre-season because he punted the shine-ola out of the ball in the pre-season game vs. Pats to save his roster spot ... and proceeded to be very unimpressive for the entire regular season. The FO ought to do him, and us a favor and cut/release him now.

That is an understatement. I was at the Giants game up here in NJ. It was b-a-d!

I have been a Redskin fan for the past 3 seasons due to association. My brother Bryan has been your punter for the past 3 years. Some of you have been brutal toward him on this forum and its been entertaining to read as most of it makes me laugh... cause most of you don't know what the hell you are talking about when it comes to punting.
Guess who's season stats are the NFC Pro Bowl punter's and which are Bryan's season stats:
#---Gross Avg.--Net Avg.--Touchback--In20--Ret. Avg--Ret.TD
77-----44.6-------35.6--------9--------22------11.5-------1
84-----40.2-------34.3--------5--------24-------9.8-------0
Sauerbrun is listed first, Bryan second. Where's the inconsistency you speak of? They have 1.3 yards difference in Net! Sauerbrun had more touchbacks, less inside the 20, more return yards against him (coverage's fault), and 1 returned for a TD (coverage's fault)!
Bryan did an excellent job this season given the situations he had to punt in... I don't think there was a single team that punted as much as the Skins did just past the 50 yard line. It's hard to have an impressive gross average when that is the case because the punter's job is to place the ball inside the 20 yard line. A 34 yarder from this field position could very well have the opponent starting at their own 14 yard line. Not great for the average, but great for our team.
Did he have an ugly shank here and there? Yes. Name a punter who doesn't shank. Geez, even Tiger Woods is going to shank a golf ball from time to time. (At least the ball is sitting still for Tiger and 280+ lb. men aren't trying to crush him as he swings!!)
Did Bryan lose a game for us because of any one punt? No. He did his job and did it well.
I know every fan base needs a scapegoat and the pre-season "punt-offs" were as ridiculous as it gets. The team sucked, the coach was overwhelmed, player attitudes stunk... soooo.... many of you and the local media focus on the punting game as our weakness? Give me a break!
And once Bryan deservedly "won" his job, nearly every single week after, on these very forums, you guys & gals gave Bryan the proverbial "game ball" on special teams for doing his job well. Feel free to look in the archives.
Now its like none of that ever happened and everyone is happy to get rid of a highly experienced, consistent punter who also happens to be the best holder in NFL history....in favor of a kid with no NFL experience.
Understand, Bryan's release is all about the cap and not about performance... same thing happened in KC and Jacksonville to him. Why pay a guy a million bucks when you can get a rookie to do the same thing for $250K? It's a business, but an unproven rookie punter is not a step up from a healthy 13 year veteran. (I wish the new guy luck, but I'll bet $ that the Skins will end up with a veteran).
Bryan will end up with another team too if he decides not to retire. He's plenty strong and can still kick the crap out of the ball. I'm sure he appreciated all the nice folks he met while playing for Washington, and would have appreciated the nice things some of you wrote about him on this board (he doesn't read it).
And to those of you that joke about his Turkey Day '02 nose injury... screw you. He nearly was the first NFL player to die on the field. No joke. You are a sick MFer if you think that was funny. I don't think I'd laugh at one of your siblings/family members if they were horribly injured.
Good day....I'm glad to get this off my chest.
Look for my Redskin swag for sale on EBay...

I agree I do not get where all the critisim is coming from Bryan did a pretty good job last year. That nose injury was nasty, man that made me sick just watching it happen. I wish him the best.....

I honestly had no problem with Barker. He did his job. I don't think I could say that about every other player except Coles, Hall (who did miss a few) and R. Thomas.
Good Luck to him!

Not offense intended ... but I still don't think he had a good season punting. Some of those shanks came at terrible times ... if he didn't punt a game or two to a lose ... he came close.
But Jeff ... I don't think you will find too many people in here who weren't compasionately concerned about your brother when he was injured.

Not that you'll be back to read this, but for the record, the intention of this thread was to note that the other punter signed didn't really have a chance of beating your brother, hence the end of the post "Training Camp Fodder."
