Kenechi Udeze, DE, U.S.C.

A lot of people consider Kellen Winslow, Jr. to be a perfect fit in Washington but upon further examination you will see that is not the case at all. Joe Gibbs wants to employ an H-Back as a receiver and then use the tight end primarily as a blocker, which would be a waste of Winslow's considerable skills as a receiving option. That's not to say he wouldn't modify his system to accommodate a premier talent like Winslow, but they also have some other needs that must be addressed and this selection could be put to better use. Washington has identified upgrading the defensive line as a top offseason priority and Udeze is one of the hottest names in the Draft right now. Even though he still has a ton of upside and potential keep in mind that Udeze was also extremely productive as a junior, registering 16.5 sacks including 3 in the Trojans Rose Bowl win over Michigan alone. Udeze would be a great fit as a replacement for Bruce Smith and would make an already talented young defense just that much better.

If we do keep the 5th pick, do we draft Udeze, who will probably be available later in the first round?

I think you have to. If he is available later its not much later. We can probably trade back to 10 and still either get him or Harris but any further then that and we'll miss out on both of them.

At least this site seems t oknow what it's talking about, unlike most.

And, yeah, I think we can't trade any further than 10.

Could Winslow line up at WR? And if so, would he be better than Fitzgerald or Roy Williams?

Gonzalez actually lines up at a "WR" spot a good bit for the Chiefs in their "wide" sets.
I think Winslow would have no trouble doing what Gonzalez does because he would probably still get matched up with a safety, but as for him excelling as a true WR...I don't know...His size and skill sets are too prized at the TE spot in the NFL for them to go to waste as a possession receiver.
Would he be better at WR than Fitz or Williams...my answer is no.

You couldn't line him up at WR on a regular basis but for certain sets he would be good to send into motion and split out. He's too big to play reciever on a regular basis.

That's exactly what a TE is. A blocker/possession receiver with even more size. They don't run the deep routes. They keep drives alive. He would be serving the exact same role but lined up at a different spot.

As far as this mock goes, I think Udeze is a good choice. I think he may start climbing up some draft boards and taking him with the 5th may not be a bad idea as we get closer to Christmas in April (they both occur on the 25th right?).

I like the Udeze pick.I was hoping we could trade down 2 or 3 spots and get him but if not so be it.

Interesting also that they have us at Greg Jones getting to us in the 2nd. Don't get me wrong. I love Greg Jones, but I think his physical freakness will push him up the boards of a few teams.

Yeah...jopefully Greg Jones' muscular build doesn't jump him up the draft boards too much after the combine.

I think both Udeze and Wilfork will both impress people at the combine so much that they will be potential top 5 picks.

Right now, we could probably trade down to 10 and get Udeze...or even <15 to get Wilfork....but the combine works in mysterious ways. (As it did for Robertson last year)

It really wouldn't shock me at all to see Udeze end up going to Arizona when its all said and done. They have despretely needed a pass rush and the passed on Suggs last season.

The Redskins need safety help and Jones is a developing talent.

Who's Sean Jones, and why would he be any better than Bowen or Iffy?

He's a hard hitting safety probably the 2nd or 3rd best in the draft. Reminds me of Ken Hamlin. I don't know if he is an upgrade though especially when he would still play on the bench for a year. We have bigger needs at RB, TE, and DL which we could possibly grab a starter in the 2nd round.
