~ ~ ESPN.com has learned that the Chicago Bears have granted defensive end Phillip Daniels permission to open discussions with other teams. Daniels is due a roster bonus of $1 million next month. He has faded from the Bears' plans for 2004 and will be released just before the team has to pay the bonus. Don't be surprised if the Washington Redskins, who need help on the defensive front, are the most ardent suitors for Daniels' services. The Redskins' new defensive line coach, Greg Blache, was defensive coordinator for the Bears the past six years and is known to be a Daniels admirer.

Had some very solid seasons in SEA and CHI. If him and Blache get along well then there is no reason not to go after him. Is he going to be released by the Bears even if there is no trade worked out? If so, I would hate to lose another draft pick or some other form of reimbursement.

He's 30 and listed at 6'5, 285...I don't think he's nearly that big or at least he wasn't when he was in Seattle...He was supposed to be an up-and-coming speed-rushing DE when the Bears signed him away from the Seahawks (in 1999)...Only had 2 and 1/2 sacks this year, 5.5 the year before, and 9 in '01. The Redskins need to find some good cheap players, but I think I would take a pass on him.

he is a good player and would be a good backup plan if the skins dont land the guys they really want.

He sounds like a lot of the DEs we have signed in the past 5 years. I don't see him being a major upgrade, but the current coaching staff has some visibility into what type of player he is. I don't remember many DEs who start out with 9 sacks and dip to 2.5 being able to turn it around again. Maybe he needs a change, but I would rather find a more proven veteran and then bring in Udeze via the draft.
