I was wondering what kind of contract a 2nd round pick usually gets. We are giving away our second in the Portis deal so I wanted to see what kind of FA we could get for the same contract as the 2nd rounder would have gotten.

In the grand scheme of football contracts, next to nothing: a few hundred thousand a year with perhaps a small bonus. Clinton Portis, for instance, is set to make something between 300,000- 400,000 next year, almost insignificant against the cap.
One might say that we are giving away what may be a Clinton Portis or Kris Jenkins that would have cost us nothing more than a second round pick and pocket change…Or a dud, but I still don’t understand why we are giving what could be a very valuable pick away.

Draft is a crap shoot. Better to spend the money on Portis, you know what you are getting with him.

Usually anyone drafted beyond the middle of the second makes near the league minimum.

IMHO the whole dang draft is a crap shoot.
If you could trade up and trade down so all you had was second round picks in every draft, could you build a descent squad? Wouldn't you always have cap room for Free Agents?
