Compensatory picks
Does it bother that the league awards up to four additional picks to teams who lose their players to free agency and don't sign any? I understand that it is some sort of payment to a team who loses players because of the salary cap but it also allows teams to let guys go and take the draft picks. My beef with it is it awards teams who are either cheap or fail to manage their cap well enough to keep their own players.

Yes, it is crap for the reasons you stated. Also when a team gets a comp in the 3rd, 4th, 5th or 6th, the teams at the beginning of the next round get their picks pushed back and that is a real pisser. How is that fair?

I'm okay with it actually. Also, it doesn't always benefit those types of teams. The ravens are looking to get 4 extra picks with at least one in the third round for their losses and I don't think its due to mismanagement. When managed properly you can use compensatory picks as a reason to not resign someone who wants too much $$$ nor replace them with a FA that doesnt fit or again wants too much $$$.

The Ravens are the team I have a problem with. They trade away three picks for McGahee because they know the welfare system will give them close to what they gave up and since the acquisition was a trade and not a FA loss, they will receive more picks. Then, also, the few we have late in the draft become worse picks.

hadn't thought of it that way. that is kind of abusing the system. they are going to come out with virtually no net loss on that McGahee deal now. that's not really fair.

Wait a minute... The Ravens are going to get comps for traded away picks???
That makes no sense and if true, where in the House of Hades are our comps?

The comps are not for traded away picks, they're for lost players in FA. But they are going to replace the picks they just traded away, thats what I meant by net loss, not really the right term in retrospect since the two actions are not actually tied together. Unfair all the same.

it could never be for picks that a team simply traded away, or we would lead the league in comp picks every year

No, what they are saying is that the Ravens traded away some picks and most likely due to their FA losses this year they will probably recoup picks that are similar to what they just traded away for Mcgahee. Escentially(sp?) they will get Mcgahee for nothing.

it undermines the spirit of letting consequences befall team that choose to be cheap and lose players.. more micromanagement of the "parity" system. and the fact that it's formula is kept clandestine indicates the league really does not want it's motives explored
has anyone done a retropsective to see what percentage of those comp picks even made their respective teams-- much less amounted to anything ? that would be a ton of work, but i wonder if someone ever followed it up ? it might be that the impact is less than we think because the vast majority of such picks are second day selection
