Portis Has Words for Riggo
http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/traini...ory?id=4437925
Quote:
But at the mention of the word "Riggo," he wasn't about to bite his tongue.
Portis kept up his running feud with Hall of Fame running back John Riggins on Tuesday. Portis, who has a chance to overtake Riggins this year as the franchise's all-time leading rusher, is clearly getting tired of being criticized by the legend he's pursuing.
"I think he was a great running back, but, you know, think of who else was around him," Portis said. "That was really not hard to be a great running back when you've got that talent all around you. I think they just had great teams, you know. I think everybody who played in that era as a running back is big around here."

I took this as another shot at his own teammates.

Portis probably needs to shut up because he never articulates things well. He's throwing his teammates under the bus and he's not giving Riggo his due as a player in appropriate terms.
But Riggo needs to slow up as well. Portis is a good back he always seems to sorta characterize Portis as no big deal and that Betts or anyone could be as productive. Thats just wrong. I sense some envy from Riggo as well.
Both guys are better than this.

New rule: When someone sticks a microphone in CP's face, he needs to just walk away.

And has little if anything to do with team chemistry (Riggo is outside), prospectsw for the season, etc. The egos are feeding the media with obnixous gas and nothing else.

agreed. they are both erragant. Still much love for both players. Riggo was just as a distraction when he played. CP does say some interesting things but i do not think that he was dissing his team mates. I think Riggo is just getting jealous cause clinton will surpass him. I love riggo, but he starts some of the controversy too. BUt...CP please stop talking haha. have a good 1500 yard 15 td year and lets get this started!!! GO SKins!!!!
Hopefully the startin O-Lineman don't go down cause then clinton will have something to complain about.

Nah, sorry, I'm not about to take sides on this one and blame Portis for anything he says about Riggo. He's been here for years and has never been anything but an absolute warrior for us, and Riggins has NEVER given him any credit. Riggins has his place in Redskins history, but has been very vocal about criticizing the guy who single-handedly took "5-0 or we don't go" from a pipe-dream to reality. No respect for Portis and what he's done despite years of consistent production.
Props to both players. Portis hasn't gotten us a ring yet, but he certainly never left the team and came back because he was broke and wanted money for booze. If Riggins won't show respect for one of the best running backs in the game, I can't fault Portis for not giving any love back to him.

I totally agree here. I remember watching shows like "Redskins Report" as a kid - even listening to Ken Beatrice on WMAL Radio - and thinking that what was said was gospel. These days, listening to Riggo, Andy Polian, and all of these other pundits just turns my stomach. Its not that they are critical of the team - I can deal with that. Its just that everything that comes out of their mouth is so speculative yet passed off as fact. Riggo seems to go against the grain for the sake of going against the grain. They all blew that Portis/Zorn thing out of proportion last year, and Riggo just keeps on keepin on with it. Just shut up already.

Love the Ken Beatrice reference. Those were the days! BTW, am I the only who remembers that Riggins was a "headache" in his Jets and early Redskin years?

if you're referring to the first game last year against the giants... that was BETTS. not portis. lol, i forgot how hard he blew that play, thanks for reminding me though!
BTW I'll take portis all day over riggins. he was a beast but i just love portis. i'm not going to try and argue with stats. all i know is CP is single reason i'm still a redskins fan. the dude takes so much punishment every game, because everybody has known that we don't have anything else. also, cp probably already has eclipsed riggins in rushing yards for a career. if we could somehow have anyone else step up we would see a 1,500 yard season from him, but that's if the other team knows that we also throw the ball

Yup.
Every time Portis doesn't get the ball on the goal line, like that Giants game . . . Or like the game against Cincinnati where we gave it to Sellers twice in a row. . . The "other guy" doesn't get it in, and we throw a fit because Portis could've made it.
Now we're criticizing him? Why? He's carried this team over and over. And over.
And he didn't throw his team under the bus. Everyone knows the hogs were one of the most dominating offensive lines in NFL history. We say it all the time as fans. Now he's saying it, and I'm supposed to have a problem w/ it? Nope.
I will never understand some of the hate Portis gets from Redskins fans.

As usual, Portis opens his mouth and divides the fan-base.
I strongly doubt that Portis will have a historic moment captured in picture, that proudly hangs on the wall of my Redskins room, that no one, Skins fan or not, has to ask what the significance of which was.
