San Diego had already gotten rid of Brees when Norv took over.

I hope you're trolling.

Just so I'm clear, you're saying Norv is better than Shanahan? Did I misread that?

Overall, without even looking I'd say that Norv is an under. 500 head coach. Plus he drafted Heath Shuler - who is a fine Congressman but a horrible QB.
Completely disagree with you. Shuler is a lousy congressman. Plus, he still lost as QB in the COngressmen v. Capitol Police game.

Shanahan was better... 10 years ago. Today I'd rather have Norv.

You're in college, right? If that's the case, I'd say you're too young to realize just how weak and pathetic the Norval years really were. It was like having seven years of erectile disfunction at the Playboy Mansion.

I'm 27... so I have some memory of the Norv years. I'd still say he's a good OC and mediocre HC. I just think that Shanahan has lost his game. Also Shanahan insists on being in charge of personnel, which is how he drives teams into the ground.

Terrible HC (Norv).. the jury is still out on Shanahan but it is absurd to use a 1 year sample given the terrible team that Zorn/Cerrato left him

Not a one-year sample. Also based on his final two years in Denver, when Norv's team outplayed his.

I wouldn't use that as much of a sample either. Norv was handed the keys to one of the top 2 or 3 most talented team on both sides of the ball when Marty was fired -- and it was really young too. Yet, in true Norv style, he has squandered that talent while doing just enough to not get fired.

And who was choosing the talent in Denver?

No one has had more talent to work with over the years than Norv..

Let's keep the critique of shanahan right now about what is going on in DC.. if we have another sub .500 team next year, unless we are being qb'ed by a rookie qb, i will tend to agree with you.

he inherited an old team with little talent.. he brought in guys like Torain, T Williams, K Williams, Armstrong , Austin, Bryant
but he also brought in guys like Galloway, Roydell Williams

leaving aside the Grossman-McNabb decisions he needs a year to continue to re tool the team

That's not how the talent got there, though. You can't keep what you don't have and you can't cut what's not on the roster. Sundquist wasn't some figurehead. It was Sundquist who gutted the payroll in the mid 2000s either to get out of the cap problems they were having. That led to letting a lot of talent they couldn't afford take a walk.

Sure, Shanny might have had a voice on draft day, but all coaches do. Look are how San Diego has eroded since Marty left. They've lost talent and not replaced it. Part of it is on the GM but part is also on the coach. Norv pisses away more talent than anyone. San Diego should eradicate that virus at their soonest convenience.

I don't know. What I've heard is that Shanny was basically making the picks. I don't think Norv, and most other NFL coaches, have the much authority. Yes, Norv got the more talented team in 2007 but Shanny had been building and rebuilding his team for a decade.
