Wow, someone actually looked at the soundbite in the larger context of the quote and of the franchise! Nicely done, and I agree. We don't want to appear desperate...even though we are. Of course, if Fisher knows Shanahan as well as the media keeps reporting, I doubt this little interlude will do anything to change the perception of our desperation.

It only works as gamesmenship if you haven't made an offer yet.

Au contraire, mon frere! There's no gamesmenship in a period of negotiation? Games will be played until an offer is accepted. An offer made means nothing, especially if you're trying not to look as desperate as you are.

So we're supposed to believe this was aimed at the Rams? If we as fans know how bad our QB situation is wouldn't you think the Rams would? This is no different than saying you put your reputation on the line for two failed QB's.

Yes and no. But to play this "we really don't need that player" game only works if you credibly act uninterested unless you're getting a good deal. And you can't say things that makes people in the NFL openly laugh at you lol. I'd buy it more if the reports were all saying that Cleveland were the leaders for the deal and that the skins might be interested at a lower price for the pick. Now it looks like Shanny made a large offer, won't give in to the Rams counter demands for the 2012 2nd and is trying to spin.

Going all in for RG3 is not our only viable option for improving this team, and there should be some level of negotiating strength taking that position.
We can build a much stronger organization utilizing our draft picks this year and acquire a more capable QB tandem than Grossman/Beck.
If we negotiate out of a sense of desperation, we're screwed. Make a fair and reasonable to the Rams for RG3. If it's not accepted we're still okay.

It's not about getting a more capable QB, it's about getting a franchise QB. I don't want Orton/Flynn or Peyton and his fused neck. I also don't want too spend a high draft choice on a 28 year old QB with an arm injury that cost him his baseball career. Like I've said before Shanahan has painted himself into a corner, RGIII will allow him to keep his job.

It's not just about the quarterback position, though. This statement is basically saying we don't have the depth to afford the luxury of trading the world for RGIII, even if secretly we would. I view it as posturing, and I am certainly no defender of Mike Shanahan.
Akh, do you have a link to where a specific offer has been made to the Rams? I'm sure we've had discussions, but I haven't seen anything about an actual offer being on the table yet.

Just Howard Eskin's report(which ESPN seems to confirm without any denials from the skins) and the subsequent reports that Shanny is balking at throwing in the 2012 2nd rounder in any deal(again, no denials). Sounds like offers have been exchanged.

Well, if offers have been exchanged, and the Rams are countering by asking for more, couldn't this report (along with our reported intent to not deal the 2nd rounder) be information aimed to let St. Louis know we are serious about not overbidding (even if we would eventually cave)?
I don't see why gamesmanship is useless after the exchange of offers.

Its very useful after an exchange of offers. Bringing in Peyton Manning and Matt Flynn, even if you have no intent on signing either, would be a great example of playing the Rams on this. And would legitimately have them thinking about making a deal. Saying things like what Shanny did isn't. The Rams(and the league) are having a good laugh at that comment and the price won't go down. Especially with the Browns and another team still in the mix.

Ok, I guess I misunderstood what you said earlier.
I'm not trying to claim Shanny is a genius or anything for this statement, I just think that's why he said it. And I wouldn't at all be surprised if we show interest in Flynn or Manning before the draft.

Lol why did he say this is his brain fried from his sun tan? If we get a top wr,rg3, a new guard and right tackle we have potential. But he said this and is about to get royal,vjax/Colston and trade up for griff so by his understanding we will have a top three offense. We had a playoff caliber run game down the stretch and a good punter ..... Rex and playoff caliber have the same ring to it as fish for breakfast lol
