If they play a creampuff schedule, like they always do, unless the Big East gets an automatic bid(which is doubtful), they could be excluded. And rightfully so. If we went by the BCS pre-bowl game standings for the various proposed playoff ideas, this is what they generally would look like:
2011: Lsu, Bama, Oka State, winner of Stanford/Oregon plays LSU
2010: Auburn, Oregon, TCU, winner of Stanford/Wisconsin plays Auburn
2009: Alabama, Texas, Cincinnati, winner of TCU/Florida plays Alabama
or in the proposal that the BigE/ACC are futilely pushing
2011: LSU v Bama, Oregon v Okla State
2010: Auburn v Ohio State, TCU v Oregon
2009: Bama v Ohio State, Texas v Florida(Boise State excluded because FLA has a higher ranking, Cincy because its out of the top 6)
The problem with all these proposals is that the schools/conferences aren't willing to give up their big bowls. Big10/Pac12 are demanding that they can play the rose bowl with their conf. champs and both can still play in the playoff if they qualify. Which complicates everything, unless the pac12/big10 champs both qualify for the playoff, then you can make the rose bowl their playoff game.

You'll almost never convince the schools/conferences to go for that. Expanding the number of teams means making the criteria far more complicated.
