Default Training Camp

They just released the schedule of open practices - no morning practices... all afternoon ones starting at 2:55pm aside from Fan Appreciation Day, which starts at noon.

Not happy about this. The past few years, I've gone to a few morning practices before work. Now I probably won't be able to make it at all, aside from F.A.D., which will undoubtedly be packed (more-so than normal) with people in my same predicament.

You do know it is in Richmond this year, right? Just saying because you spoke of going to the morning sessions before work... If you live and work in NoVA, then you would have had to take the day off to have gone to a morning practice, if they had them this year.

Anyhow, the afternoon sessions are hot as Hell, I've gone through 3 or 4 liters of water just standing and watching an afternoon practice in August. Will be interested to see if the Richmond and surrounding area fans will show up in the numbers 2000-5000+ that were consistent in Ashburn.

I'm not even sure if Ashburn would work as a venue for this now with that enormous bubble they put up... Though, I haven't been to the Park yet to see where exactly it is. I know you can see it from many high points in the eastern part of Loudoun Co.

Richmond doesn't start until 2013!

Not sure if I'll be going this year...a 3 o'clock start means I don't get to the highway till 5 or so...not sure I want to sit in traffic for another 2 hours to get home... I would love to near the rationale behind this one....get it in early and get out early...this make no sense to me...don't seem like they had their fans in mind on this one...

Not only is the 2:55 time bad traffic-wise, it is also going to be hotter than a morning practice. One almost wonders if the team is deliberately trying to cut down the crowds at training camp. And, if so, why?

Moreover, I presume there is going to be only 1 practice by the players each day. That means it will be hotter for the players as well compared to past years. This is a head-scratcher.

The only thing I can think of is that they might do some morning practice stuff in the practice bubble now, so they might not be able to let people into that.

the open practices used to rotate between afternoon and morning being open before shanny. this year shanny has decided to have the walkthrough in the morning and the main practices in the afternoon, opposite of last year. i dont recall people complaining about the evening practices before then though. and yeah the heat will be brutal. im willing to bet some open practices will be cancelled to the fans and moved into the bubble, either due to weather or extreme heat. be sure to take plenty of water.

I don't recall it either..,I also don't recall them having all their practices at the same time either. If you want to use the bubble that's fine too. Just switch it up some so everyone will have a chance to attend. I guess they are waving bye bye to this area anyway and telling Richmond, "we got one foot in the door and the other out, here we come Richmond". You would think that with the last year being here they would be a little more accommodating. Jackasses....

Per the new CBA they are allowed a 1 hour walk through and (up to) 3 hour practice with contact per day. This would suggest the morning is used for the walk through and the afternoon for practice. It also seems that training in the heat is kind of a necessary evil.

I understand that training camp is July-Aug and thus will always be conducted in heat. But, I don't really understand why one would choose a hotter time of the day to practice.

Washington isn't Miami--the Skins are likely to play no more than 2 games on average in hotter weather each year. Not clear why the team (and watching fans) need to be subjected to hotter weather in training camp.

Now, if there is an advantage for having the walk-thru in the morning and the practice in the afternoon, then at least I can understand it. But, if that were so, how come it hasn't been done this way for years and years?

Is this some sort of crowd control thing? Perhaps they're afraid TC this year will be overrun with people trying to get a glimpse of RG3, and by doing all afternoon practices, they will have less people to control/worry about? Just a thought.

Because the new CBA altered/limited the number and manner of practices. They can't do two-a-days and can only conduct X number (don't recall off the top) of contact practices per year.

Disagree completely with this one statement, are you not from the Metro area? The first 6 games of the season will probably be in the heat and they should practice accordingly.

Have been a long time dweller in the DC area. The heat starts to taper off in late Sept. Sometimes, it gets chilly even in Oct. So, I just don't see where 6 games would be played in oppressive heat. Of course, global warming/climate change is already upon us. So, you may be right about future years.
