Default Brees' Contract

Wow! According to Profootballtalk.com he's getting $60 million guranteed. Which is going to cause some problems for Green Bay, New York (Giants), and other teams with good QBs. Take Aaron Rodgers for instance:

Quote:
Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers, signed for three more years, will earn a base salary of only $8 million in 2012. How can the reigning league MVP not merit an upgrade in the wake of Brees’ deal?
Three more years. With the team recently disclosing a record profit, I expect him his agent will be calling Mark Murphy soon.

More of his contract particulars.

I can only hope RGIII merits the same talk in a few years.

Gracious, we are going to be made an example of during Week 1, he is going to want to justify his paycheck at home.

Brees is gonna win that game all by himself.

Just woke up from a great dream. It started with the pregame speech in the locker room. Griffin gave a passionate speech honoring all of the veterans on the team, and challenging everyone to play at their peak level.

NOLA defers the opening coin toss, and the noise is deafening. RGIII and the offense opens up in hurry-up and races down the field. As soon as they get to the line, the ball is snapped. Armstrong scores on a 40 yard pass up the sideline. At the end of the 1st quarter, we are up 17-0.

At halftime, we are up 20-10, and Brees is starting to get hot. RGIII pleads to not be conservative and keep driving the ball down the field as fast as possible. We win 34-27 in a game marked by great offensive & defensive play.

The TV goes to coverage of bars in DC and it's like we won the Superbowl. Fans are yelling "We've got ourselves a QUARTERBACK baby!", and for the first time in 20 years, the city is alive with Redskins fever.

Okay, it was just a dream, but it was very vivid, and what a nice way to wake up.

The whole situation is kind of weird to me. Brees is a great QB, and he won them the Super Bowl, which he completely deserves credit for. It seems kind of crazy to give a 33 year old this much money. It also seems completely against Brees' "nice guy" nature to essentially threaten a hold out to get a new contract. I figured he would have taken the 19.5 million a season and called it a day. That was a fair contract.

At any rate, this has clearly set a new precedent for QB contracts. Rodgers will be seeking that top dollar soon enough. And if Brees deserves it, Rodgers does too.

+1

he is not the largest man and has a history of major right shoulder injury/surgery.. they better protect his a$$.. if he goes down they are in deep trouble (even with Chase the Magnificent in reserve, lol)

A 36 year old Brees 60% of his former self is still probably better then most of the QBs in the league.

that is most certainly true.. but I wouldnt want to see Brees trying to operate behind a substandard O line, without Payton and taking shots continously..

Agreed. And: Losing Brees plus the fallout from the bounty scandal would have put the Saints into an endless tailspin.
