This is why the Mets are known as the worst team money can buy. I think Daniel Snyder takes sports management lessons at Shea Stadium.

Both my gf and my brother's wife are Long Island Mets fans. How we, as Yankees fans, did that is even beyond us. My sister-in-law's brother says Shea is "where hall-of-famers go to die".

Well, that's what Roberto Alomar did. Adiebee is also a Long Island Mets fan. I just called her and told her the news and she just groaned. She's been down this road before. I'd laugh a bit more, but overpaying for an old star going rapidly downhill is a pain Redskins fans know all too well.

Gotta credit the Bosox [sorry Dave] for hanging tough here. The pressure to retain a sentimental favorite [and first ballot Hall of Famer] like Pedro Martinez must be incredible, but they're doing the right thing.

The two responses I got were "yuck" and "great". I thought Minaya knew better but he's been so hamstrung the last few years that signing a big name must have made his head spin.

Why would Pedro even want to go to the Mets... they are the freakin' METS!! If the price is right I guess. (Hopefully he will "die" at Shea... so my Phils don't have to worry about him pitching well)

The Sox may be doing the right thing in the long run but not the short. I think one of the things players around baseball like about the Yankees after they see dollar signs is a level of loyalty. Loyalty, of course, is expensive though.

Often the two are mutually exclusive. I like the way the Bosox have handled this. You've got to draw the line somewhere and in general I think contracts for ANY pitcher of more than three years are a bad idea.

Yes if a team wants to grossly overpay and overcommit for Pedro then the Sox should let them. This is an absolutely terrible signing for the Mets, between this and the Sosa rumors, this franchise continues to operate like a neglected child who struggles for his mother's attention in the shadows of their more talented older sibling.

Oh Axe... you were so cool up until that point right there.... But I guess this can be overlooked, so long as you don't worship the group Mike Piazza walks on...

yeah, good move by the BoSox. We are not talking about the Pedro of '99... while still a quality pitcher, he has been injury prone and is limited due to questionable stamina. no way he is worth what they are paying him, IMO. i am glad to see the BoSox did not take the bait and pick up that contract.

Yes, if the guy has a bum shoulder and can't get past the sixth inning now, what in the world is he gonna look like in four years? Scary for Mets fans I think.
