Udeze's Pro Day Results
Udeze's numbers from NFL.com:
Quote:
|
Udezi (6-2 7/8, 273) ran his 40s in 4.77 and 4.81. He had a 39-inch vertical jump, 10-foot-5 long jump and did 25 strength reps.
|
I though he was going to run a sub 4.6 and that with his “titanic” strength he could do more than 25 reps…guess he was as hyped as Taylor. He is showing that he is not the be all end all solution to our line woes as many, many have claimed. I think he is a very good middle 1st round pick, but a lot of people need to temper there rhetoric regarding this kid from now on and entertain other possibilities.

I like this. Now trading down with Houston would still ensure us the pick. The combine is overhyped, as we saw with Terrell Suggs.

I think, to be fair, we should all reconsider Will Smith: he had a great workout.
Quote:
|
Smith (6-2½, 267) ran his 40s in 4.58 and 4.62. He did a 38½-inch vertical jump, a 9-foot-9 long jump and he benched 225 pounds a total of 30 times. A sore ankle prevented him from running the short and long shuttles, but he ran 7.42 in the three-cone drill.
|
So he weighs a five or so pounds less, but is significantly faster and a bit stronger. I am not a big Smith fan and he has produced less than Udeze, but my east coast bias tells me that they don’t pass protect in the PAC-Ten like they do in the Big Ten.
He is worth a strong look, as is Udeze trade down or KWII.

Terrell Suggs had a horrible combine last year. Can anyone argue with the end result.

To bad Udeze is not even close to being what Terell Suggs was and is. You are making a very unfair comparison.

You could have said the same about Suggs last year, only comparing him to Freeney or Peppers. When Udeze is defensive R.O.Y., you'll all see.

I agree that they do block much better in the Big Ten than in the Pac-Ten however when Ohio State played michigan Will smith did not fare very well, on the other hand when USC played Michigan Udeze had like 4 sacks.

Terell Suggs was his team, while Udeze was a bright light on the most talented team in the country. Suggs is the NCAA sack king; Udeze is not. You can continue to believe that he will be defensive rookie of the year, which is your prerogative. If he is rookie of the year, good for him, but I saw many of USC’s games and I don’t get why this is such a tightly held assumption.

I was sort of joking around...my only point was that the Udeze fanatics need to give it a bit of and rest a seriously look at this question objectively.

Yeah, and some DEs had better workout numbers than Terrell Suggs last year. Guess we saw whether or not that matters more than production, huh?
I don't claim that Udeze is the be-all, end-all of DEs, and I haven't seen many people that do. He's just the strongest player at our weakest position. It makes the most sense.

I agree with this, Udeze played on probably the best Dline in the country Suggs did not. Udeze is not Terrell Suggs, but is the closest thign we can get in this Class I think so.

Well looks like Udeze is mortal just like Sean Taylor and KWII. I still think that you can't judge a player by a 40 time or a wonderlic test but NFL scouts must or else no player would need to do these drills.
Those are not bad stats for Udeze but people got carried away with him like some did with Taylor. I read on some draft sites where Udeze was projected to do 35 reps and run a high 4.5 40's. That's what gets people dissapointed.
Look at Taylor's workout. He had a hurt hamstring and still ran a 4.5 forty. Healthy in 2002 Roy Williams ran a 4.53 40 (scored a 23 on the wonderlic for all of you wonderlic fans). Ed Reed ran a 4.54 40. (Reed scored a 14 on the wonderlic). Other DB's in that draft ran a lot faster, scored higher on the wonderlic, benched more but aren't in the league anymore. Some guys are just combine studs, couldn't put it together on the field. Like another user brought up Terrell Suggs did worse than Udeze in his combine scores but he turned out ok. Other's who ran the great 40 times and benched more didn't do so well last year.
