Dont get It
Ok - I am a die hard fan, but dont understand the cap. We are only 1.5 mil under the cap and have yet to go through the draft. How do we sign anyone else?? Lose players, restructure contracts????

There are better minds on this forum than mine regarding capinomics. But, you sign a guy to 5 mil. for 4 yrs with a 1 mil SB
give him the league min the first yr x+ 1 mil divided by number of your on a contract. only costs you around 500k the first yr.
I callit SNYDER math

Hehe jschlesi..Snyder Math is a good term
Its because the guys we usually sign get large signing bonuses and little in way roster bonus. That way we can prorate it over the oife of the contract. If we need more room there is plenty of guys we can be cut. Trung is an example.

Thras restructured as well, and I half suspect we will eventually see a Chris Samuels restructure. Cap room may be freed up as well if Gardner is dealt.

The only way we save cap space on dealing Gardner is if it's done after June 1. Otherwise we will be hit with 1.2M in signing bonus vs. saving 1 million in salary. (Basically lose 200K in cap for trading Gardner before June 1)
I guess if Gardner is going to be traded for draft picks, he will have to be traded before June 1, correct? Or can you technically "trade him" on draft day and not do the paper work until after June 1?

I'm almost certain that's against NFL rules. The Redskins could easily trade Gardner after June 1 for a pick or picks in the 2005 Draft, of course.

Dang. That is what I figured.
2005 picks would be nice...but we need ones in 2004!
So if we actually lose money by trading Gardner this year, does that mean he could be safe for another year? Or does anyone think it could be a player for player trade?

I could see Rod being traded for 05 picks, as that would be Joes second season and he would know a lot more in terms of who he has and wants to keep after a season with the team

Here's my take - rookies (our draft picks) have their own cap allocation, they must fit under the cap but it's seperate from the current $1.5M that we are under. Example: Total Salary Cap 2004 = $80M (it's actually close to that). Of that $80M, $3.5M might be designated for rookies. Our current salaries for 2004, excluding rookies = $75M. We are $1.5 under the cap and we still have $3.5M for rookies. Make sense?

interesting artical. check out this quote:
Here's another little-known technicality. Those "likely to be earned" incentives mentioned above? Well, when they're not reached, they become cap credits the following year, which can mean a hidden bonanza for an underachieving franchise. A team that plays poorly, and which writes incentives into many of its player contracts, may actually reap a reward the year after. Case in point: the 2004 Vikings, who are an astounding $33 million under the cap. In actuality, the Vikings' cap is almost $95 million, because Minnesota gets more than $14 million in cap credits this year for "likely to be earned" incentives that weren't earned by their players in 2003.
there's a lesson to be learned in there somewhere.

i like the idea of trading for next years pick, if its a first rounder, because i dont see us being lousy enough to pick high in the draft anymore for a while.

We need to trade Gardner for something this year....What if he has a lousy year...then we won't get anything...!!! Then we'l be stuckwith him for another year and unable to get anything for him...
