While the names on the line remain the same, the difference in 2004 will be their coach, Joe Bugel. Buges, as he is affectionately known, is a man of fire and passion, with a knack for building premiere offensive lines. He coached arguably one of the best ongoing offensive lines from 1982-1989, the Hogs. Coach Bugel is also renowned for his fiery emotion that always had his players ready for game time. Joe Jacoby had a fond memory of the 1982 NFC championship game versus Dallas. He recalled a pre-game speech where Buges was pleading with his players to keep their head in the game and not to lose their temper; however, once on the sidelines, Jacoby recalled, "Russ [Grimm] is one side of Joe [Bugel] and I'm on the other. When it's over, Joe [Bugel] looks over to the other sideline at Ernie Stautner, who's the Cowboys defensive line coach. Joe [Bugel] yells over to him and then flips him off. This is the guy telling us to keep our cool." This feisty temper is what makes Buges one of the boys, yet his players respect and listen to him in the highest regard.

Stability
The key nugget to the article on Greg Williams is the part about him taking over for Gibbs in a few years. Take a look at how the staff was put together for the Redskins. On the offensive side you have mostly the old Gibbs crew with the exception of Byner and the WR coach (from LSU, I think).
On defense you have a much younger cast built with Williams' involvement and approval. you even have a former DC working with the defensive line (Blache). So it would appear that the order of succession is complete. When Gibbs steps down, Williams takes over and Blache takes the DC reigns. Then Williams hires an OC he is comfortable with and that guy can name his staff (since I will assume that Buges, Breax, and the other over-the-hill gang will go with Joe) and we move on with stability in the coaching ranks.
Heck Williams might even find someone to promote to OC from within. either way the direction of the team and the voice in charge will be familiar to the team already. It will, of course, hurt to lose Gibbs no matter when he retires but if we can get a sharp coach with HC experience and a few years of watching Joe operate so much the better.
Now all we have to hope for is that our improved defense does not create so much buzz for Williams that he moves on to another HC job. You know the best way to do that right? That's right - play in the SB. That way Williams can't interview and he is stuck.

Of coruse we are assuming that Gibbs success (which we are all hoping for) doe snot snag away some of these coahces for better opportunities and head coaching positions. Williams? Maybe not. Maybe he understands and knwos he is the heir, will stick around and learn from the legend. BUT, Blache? If he gets a better opportunity, he wont stick around. Same with Byner. Same with Hixson. Gibbs wont hold them back either.

i think they will stick around, because i think snyder will pay them enough to stay. how about byner working his way up through the ranks? in 5 years he might be ready to be the offensive coordinator. as for williams and blache, dont forget they also hired the defensive coordinator from the chargers to coach the line, or something, and they got that guy from the giants to coach the DB's.... the defensive coaching staff is loaded with over qualified personell.

Last couple of years we had the most inexperienced coaching staff in the N.F.L. Now we have the most experienced/over qualified staff in the league.I like our situaution NOW.

i think Snyder has learned a lot in the last few years. he opens up the bank book for gibbs and goes and gets these guys and now we have the highest paid and most experienced coaching staff in the league.

thank you kind sir.. i only try and do my part in this great Skins'-family site we have here. it's really not that much work as i have bookmarked any football site especially w/ the Skins' in it and check it periodically.. usually at night when the next day's articles come out. but i'm more than happy to do it for the great fans on this board. now only if the mod's/adm's make me the official breaking news guy then i'd be more of a hound.

I think Joe will be running the show for years to come. If not as coach, than as President. It will probably be his coaching staff to control for the next 8-10 years

Great post. That story about Buges is hilarious... and exactly what I would expect from a fan of our team, not to mention our OL coach!! I hope the thing about Williams being Gibbs's successor is true... I think once he learns how to coach a team, particularly an offense, he'll be a great coach.

thats a good point, something to think about....i had not thought about Gibbs continuing as team president or in some other capacity after he steps down from coaching.
