Fox News pulls reporter's item with fake Kerry quotes
WASHINGTON (AP) — Fox News apologized Friday for posting phony quotes from Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry on its Web site.

Carl Cameron, a Fox reporter who covers the Kerry campaign, wrote an item that looked like a news story with made-up Kerry quotes, said Paul Schur, a Fox spokesman. The item was not intended to be posted on the site.

(Some of the quotes that Cameron made up that Kerry said)

"Didn't my nails and cuticles look great? What a good debate!' Kerry said Friday.

"With the foreign-policy debate in the history books, Kerry hopes to keep the pressure on and the sense of traction going.

"Aides say he will step up attacks on the president in the next few days, and pivot somewhat to the domestic agenda, with a focus on women and abortion rights.

'"It's about the Supreme Court. Women should like me! I do manicures,' Kerry said."

The item also quoted Kerry as saying of himself and President Bush: "I'm metrosexual — he's a cowboy."

The whole thing is ridiculous. First of all, is Carl Cameron in ninth grade? How juvenile do you have to be to find that funny? What a dope. And Fox "News" considers him the cream of their crop. Secondly, how did that "story" get on the website in the first place? Reporters generally don't just post their own stuff to the website. It would have to go thru an editor and then to the tech guys. Doesn't anyone read this stuff before putting it on the website? Do they employ fact-checkers at Fox "News"? [Oh, that question lends itself to a number of rather good lines, but I'll refrain.] Finally, how can such a person be allowed to continue to cover the Kerry campaign? Answer: It's Fox "News"!

Yea well I think the difference here is that this was an accident. I don't recall that CBS's was an accident. As a matter of fact they stood by it.

I agree with that, but it's not the same as what CBS did

And it gets better. While doing a story on Kerry supporters and how they reacted to the first debate, Fox "News" posted this on their website:
Quote:
Of course, there were some Kerry supporters in attendance who had no doubts whatever about their candidate.

"We're trying to get Comrade Kerry elected and get that capitalist enabler George Bush out of office," said 17-year-old Komoselutes Rob of Communists for Kerry.

"Even though he, too, is a capitalist, he supports my socialist values more than President Bush," Rob said, before assuring FOXNews.com that his organization was not a parody group. When asked his thoughts on Washington's policy toward Communist holdout North Korea, Rob said: "The North Koreans are my comrades to a point, and I'm sure they support Comrade Kerry, too."

It is unclear whether the Kerry campaign has welcomed the Communists' endorsement.
The boys at Fox "News" must have loved this and rushed it into the story. Kerry being endorsed by actual communists! Republicans all over America getting a woody at the very thought of it. Unfortunately for all of them, especially Fox "News," the whole thing was a joke.

"Communists for Kerry" is actually a front group of the Hellgate Republican Club. As the club itself makes clear, none of its members are communists or support John Kerry. They're all Republicans. [See here.] A tiny bit of investigation would have revealed that, of course, but as we see above, Fox "News" doesn't do a lot of work on fact-checking. This story made the rounds at a number of liberal blogs, with much hilarity at the expense of Fox "News" enjoyed. Noticing this, Fox "News" made an adjustment to their original story and didn't inform anyone. I guess they hoped we wouldn't notice. The new, revised story is here.

The timing of the apology is all you have, CBS has admitted to making the mistake and is no longer denying it. CBS and Dan Rather wouldn't intentionally put out that story if they knew it was false, that's suicide.

Of course not. CBS did a story based on documents that even the White House considered legitimate. [When confronted with the documents, the White House never challenged their accuracy.] Fox "News" just invents "news." Very different.

But they backed it after the questions were raised. Only once they were proven 100% false did they back down.

And Spence...no more misleading then John Kerry was with his "so called stats" Thursday night. 35 countries with better weapons capabilites then Iraq. And probably 30 of those are allies.

Kerry probably understated the case. Since Iraq had no weapons at all [I know it kills you to read that, but the truth is a bitch sometimes], a lot more than 35 countries were more dangerous than Iraq. As we've seen, Iraq only became dangerous AFTER Mr Bush invaded and plunged the country into bloody chaos.

But that's all you have and they backed down, all this in a timeline of less than a few weeks.

Let's also remember that CBS was intentionally misled. No one had anything to do with Fox's coverage other than Fox employees. Also, what WAS the intended purpose of the "quotes" as created by the reporter? Are we to believe that the reporters have time during the debates to make stuff up just for fun or sharing at the Murdoch lounge later on?

What a bunch of mopes. This is what you get when one GUY owns the media outlets and can express his views through those outlets. This is why whatever mistakes a series of people at CBS can make they are not coordinated like Fox News is.

Of course, anyone who believes John Kerry would utter the word "metrosexual' is so stupid that they would vote for Bush anyway.

Fox News...

Widely regarded within the news gathering business as a collection of the most unprofessional/clueless people in the business.

No one actually in the television profession takes anything from Fox News seriously.

If you thought the jokes about Dan Rather were plentiful, you should ask TV folks about Fox News jokes.
